@kaykay I find that her hurt and dilemma of intruding in the relationship as the best I have seen. It is a tough role. Normally the role is portraying as direct evil husband steal like Kenix Kwok in ‘Born Rich’. Michael Tong who I once tipped to be first lead over a decade ago has seriously improved since his stint in China. The love relationships have been done well in this Heart of Greed. The family bond though is not as strong as the previous series. Only Susanna and Ha Yu of the veterans have kept the standard up supported by Louis Yuen.
@jimmyszeto disagree that Sharon Chan is underrated. I find her acting so-so at best, which isn't good considering how long she's been in the industry. I feel like she's had little improvement over the years. I do agree that she and Michael are both very professional in their portrayal though. There are just certain aspects of their interactions that makes me feel uncomfortable. For example, after their first sexual encounter, she asked him the next morning "how was I?" or something along the lines of that and it just came off so awkward and strange. They also made her character transition so abrupt. All of a sudden she stopped dressing conservatively and her glasses disappeared? I dunno, just not sold on it. Even Moon's performance as a third party in Two Steps From Heaven was better.
One real difference is that Heart of Greed does not have the strong family bonding feel as the earlier versions. The veterans have either deteriorated in acting (Louise Lee) or given much less screen time (Michelle Yim)
recycle plot who doesn't now a day, every drama will now have similar plot, HOG3 is very watchable their still in the phase of introducing and building up the characters, im sure its gonna be more dramatic and intense as we reach the last portion of the serie but so far enjoying the comedy side of it.
@llwy12 Good insight as always. "Based on the above, you guys can formulate your opinion however you wish. Personally though, I think the piece about using recycled storylines and characters because “that’s what the audiences want” is a load of crap. LKH is obviously still of the old mentality where the thinking is that TVB’s target audience is and always will be see lais (housewives) who like to spend their free time reading gossip mags and watching mindless soap operas on TV — they don’t want to watch anything that requires them to think and so script, aesthetics, quality of production, etc, none of that matters as long as it’s something housewives can relate to. It’s this kind of antiquated thinking that leads TVB to continue churning out the same types of series over and over and over again." I avoid creators who think people are that dense, TVB or not. Unfortunately, money talks louder than quality sometimes. Even the Star Wars films outside of the original trilogy receive tons of flak (more so prequels) but at the end of the day they make a ton of money in box office. Yes, SW is an extreme example since it's an international franchise but the principle can apply.
@elizabeth This is my biggest beef with the series tied with forced preaching.
@bubbles23 lol nothing wrong with basics... who knows it can be an expensive brand of high quality ingredients!
@llwy12 I am just glad people stopped drinking the HOG kool aid and are slowly realizing how flawed the premise in general is. And let's not get started on the cheesy family scenes and golden words. I saw a bit of the new one and goodness that musical chairs thing is cringy beyond belief. Third installments can be hit or miss too especially if the plot is lacking.
@llwy12 I don’t have a problem with that. Screw Hong Kong. It’s a tiny market anyway. Just give them some sitcoms and daft humour and they will be elated.
@akcc1975 You aren’t much of a fan of the crap series ‘the unholy alliance then’? Also Who is Rico Chan?
@kaykay @elizabeth They've missed out Chris lai. I wonder why he didn't join the sequel of Heart of greed 3? It's not that I'm against them adding new cast members but without all the original cast members, the drama doesn't feel like Heart of greed anymore.
Priscilla must have very very good connections to be able to land lead roles in 2 anniversary dramas this year. Having a billionaire dad helps a lot. After catching up with more episodes of LW2, i can finally understand why netizens are baying for her blood. Her role in LW2 is sooooooooo annoying, it makes you wonder how on earth she could be an undercover cop. She fumbled and bungled her way around. If this wasn't TV she would have been dead many times over. She acted more like a wide-eyed innocent girl than an undercover. I don't know if I can make it through the rest of the drama, uggghhhhh.
Best Actor Rico Chan Best Actress Nancy Wu Best Supporting Actor Joel Chan Best Supporting Actress Elaine Yiu Best On Screen Couple Rico Chan And Nancy Wu Best Drama Either Unholy Alliance/Legal Mavericks/Line Walker 2/Heart And Greed
@melia880 Seems like it is Priscilla from ‘swipe tap love’ but with a different dog. Don’t find Michael and Sharon relationship uncomfortable at all. It happens a lot in reality. They are very brave on taking on the characters since it can’t be very likeable to the viewers. Very professional performances. Sharon Chan is very underrated...
@mike He must be a decent guy since he has many friends and they have forgiven him over the incident. Everyone makes mistakes. Life is short!
@kaykay Re: Priscilla being the same in every drama she's ever been in -- yes!! Even her clothes are the same baggy pastel coloured clothes!! Also agree with you about enjoying Vincent and Eliza's relationship. I'm looking forward to seeing how they will develop since that's the only real thing to look forward to... Sharon and Michael's affair makes me VERY uncomfortable.
@m0m0 The reality is, even if the ratings drop down to zero points in HK, TVB is still going to air it because all that matters to them nowadays is how well the series does in Mainland China. The ratings for HOG3 in HK currently are dismal, but in Mainland, it has garnered nearly 400 million views so far – sure, this number is nowhere near what Line Walker 2 was able to get in Mainland, but still relatively impressive (for TVB’s standards) considering that number is 50X the population of HK (which only has a population of 7 million versus China’s 1.3 billion). And it’s kind of obvious that LKH made the series with Mainland audiences in mind (after all, his and his wife’s official producer titles at TVB do have “Mainland China” on them now). So bottom line – doesn’t matter what the ratings are in HK or what HK audiences think….as long as Mainland audiences like the series (and so far it looks like they do as there has been mostly positive feedback from that front), that’s the only thing that’s going to count in TVB’s eyes.
Can't believe he got this opportunity despite what happened. A man with very questionable character. Time will make people forget.
Don't know much about her family other than they must be rich. Come on, their daughter plays golf? In HK? Stephanie has been instable ever since she won the singing contest. Fred knew all about her problems and what he has to face to date her and still went ahead with it...
Some series are recycled and characters typecast but still watchable because of solid actors and solid standard. Ha Yu and Louis Yuen are always amazing. Louise Lee though seems unhealthy and the energy she puts into her character seems forced and needs to retire. I don’t think viewers intelligence have improved at a significant pace. At few years back lots of brilliant Jonathan Chik series were dismissed because viewers found them too complicated although there was some genius plots. Heart of Greed is still very watchable and suits the Hong Kong audience.
@funnlim everyone who loves a good written story should boycott this stupid recycled drama. if ppl stay watching because of the actors then it is a encouragement for them to make more of such trash things.
@unknown Keep on fantasizing and dreaming about Chris Lai....
@elizabeth Real brave, admirable acting by Sharon Chan. Considering being married with a child.
I think the series may be better if they don't try to shove so many stars into one series. There is not enough story for all of them to develop. I am only watching as my parents want to watch it. So far, seeing Sharon and Michael Tong makes me want to slap them.
I think they changed the scriptwriter for this one. The scriptwriter for the previous 2 installments was better.
@melia880 @lewismcchan They've missed out Chris lai. I wonder why he didn't join the sequel of Heart of greed 3? It's not that I'm against them adding new cast members but without all the original cast members, the drama doesn't feel like Heart of greed anymore.
@passingby how about dropping the series entirely? didn't that happen before or is it b/c there's no competitors, they can put trash on screen even if it's got 0 pts?
Going to have to agree that HOG3 is nowhere near as good as the first two. Michelle Yim, Ha Yu, and and Louise Lee are all wasted here, as their screen time is fairly limited to them eating dinner at home or in a meeting room. Although, I'm not sure that the basis of their characters are even all that different than the previous installments. Echoing @melia880 that Lee Shing Cheong, Susanna Kwan, and Louis Yuen are type casted. And they're ultra annoying. Jacqueline Ch'ng is horrible to watch too. Also hit the nail on the head about Priscilla being exactly the same in every drama she's ever been in. Unrelated but I also think that Pakho is on the same boat (all his movie roles are the same and interchangeable). Aside from the cheese "golden lines," random singing, and very cringeworthy **SPOILER ALERT** affair between Sharon and Michael, the only thing I'm really enjoying is the relationship between Vincent and Eliza.
i wonder what happened to her. did it onset all the sudden? i wonder what it is she's allergic to. poor girl, hope she gets well soon.
@moonsp Vincent and Ali were not supporting characters. edit: also Benjamin Yuen won favourite male character last year so it won't be possible for him to be nominated for most improved
I hope the ratings continue to slip below 20 points. Then we can be spared the ordeal of a 4th instalmeht.
A lot of people are buying the non-TVB boxes to watch tv these days, TVB ratings don't account for those.
By the way – there’s another article that HK01 did where they break down the 3 main reasons why HOG 3’s ratings are low and overall hasn’t been able to capture HK audience’s attention. This article is a nice supplementary piece to the article above and the arguments are quite valid (especially the part about switching focus to Mainland China market)…if you can read Chinese, I recommend reading this one too: https://www.hk01.com/娛樂/140894/-溏心風暴3-任噏亂評-三大原因導致收視差-不過TVB應該好少理
The series is definitely stupid, but I'm still watching it mainly because I really do love the cast. I love the older generation (especially Michelle Yim!!, and Bosco, Vincent, Eliza, Sharon, Michael. Those random moments where they suddenly stop eating dinner to play musical chairs is definitely cringey and I am embarrassed for the person who came up with that idea. I'm also liking Lee Kwok Lun's role as Alan, rather than his usual scheming typecasted characters. The actors/characters I must say I'm not a fan of in the drama are Lee Shing Cheong, Susanna Kwan, and Priscilla Wong. Lee Shing Cheong and Susanna are both just a matter of typecasted roles... they literally play the same character for every drama and they are both so loud and ridiculous that I honestly find them very annoying. The only redeeming parts is they seemed to have toned down the ridiculousness this drama (although Jacquelin Chn'g is doing a splendid job helpnig them with it.. ha.). Louis Yuen is also on that boat. Priscilla is just ... her acting isn't AWFUL but I've finally found what my problem with her acting is. She plays herself in every drama that she's in. There is practically no difference between her role as Sonia vs. her role as Cheng Suk Mui vs. her role in Swipe Tap Love / that Madam Cutie drama / that wedding drama with Tony. Even her evil role in the drama with Edwin/Bosco was the same, at least towards the beginning... she just suddenly became very evil for like one scene. She is always the chill, happy-go-lucky, everyone-loves-her girl-next-door girl...
@bubbletea Ooo can you share what you know about the family? I haven't heard anything about the family, but there's been sooo much news about these two, IDK how she can deal with the negativity, especially if she has a mental illness.
@lewismcchan Agreed! Unfortunately though, as much as we may complain about it, we also know it’s wishful thinking because the fact of the matter is that doing sequels / spinoffs, recycling old storylines/characters, etc. is an easy money grab – it’s the best way to make money without having to put in as much effort in the creativity department. Yes, it’s true that Hollywood and pretty much all other places do it too, but it’s worse when HK does it because the (entertainment) market is so small there. At least with Hollywood, if we don’t like a particular program or movie or whatnot, there are a million other options we can turn to – also, in terms of TV series, there is more motivation to make a good series that appeals to audiences and maintains good ratings because if you don’t, you might not make the cut the following year and/or you could even get axed mid-season immediately after debut. In HK, that’s not an option, since there is essentially only 1 local TV station (since both ViuTV and Fantastic Television are too new and haven’t produced enough content to be included on the same level) and no motivation to do better, since there is no competition, which means the ratings are also meaningless (and no, TVB isn’t going to ax their own series midway – they’ve only done this once in their 50 year history and it technically wasn’t because of ratings either). So basically TVB has carte blanche to keep churning out crap and if audiences don’t like it, then the other option is to either turn to internet series or watch series from other countries (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Mainland China, U.S., etc.).
@llwy12 Mr Lau fails to understand that people are getting smarter and are tired of watching the same kind of scripts again and again. However, it happens in US when the producers made many sequels until the series die. Everyone should get his team together to formulate new story lines and forget about cycling old scripts. A sequel should only be done if there are really unfinished business in the original. If a producer fails to understand this, he really should retire.
LOL…well, so much for the assertion by HOG’s producer Lau Ka Ho that he was “merely giving audiences what they wanted to see”. Obviously he is assuming that TVB’s audience still only consists of stay-at-home housewives who have the TV on as background noise while they do their chores or cook dinner, so as long as the characters in the series keep up the noise level with everyone and their mothers (literally) yelling at each other, who the hell cares about the script / story? Honestly, Lau Ka Ho and Mui Siu Ching need to retire already – I used to like the series they produced back in the 80s and 90s, but in the recent decade, most of what they’ve churned out has been formulaic….and worst of all, it looks like they’ve started subscribing to the Wong Jing school of thought: there’s no need for quality and substance in their productions, since HK audiences are too dense to understand anything too complicated anyway…just keep recycling old storylines / characters / plots, bring back a bunch of veterans whom audiences love, throw in a bunch of popular current/up-and-coming siu sangs and fa dans, up the nostalgia factor a hundred fold, stir up as much hype as possible, and voila, there you have it – a tried and true formula that works every time (NOT!).
In all honesty I am enjoying Heart and Greed even if it is stupid, it does have some good moments in terms of depiction of the dynamics of a family. Business wise, this series is bankrupt. It is so stupid I wonder if a business is run like this, no way Hk will be first world. BUT I do think performances are very strong even if I wonder when will anyone of any importance do something rather than nothing (BOSCO!!). I am however no patiene for Sharon Chan and her lust for her professor cum colleague and the very very important position in any company that it must be repeated at leas 10 times per episode, the C! E! O!
@hohliu AGREE. While undoubtedly all those expectations weren't WHAT he envisioned perhaps (he sounds like he wasn't ready to be a GROUP member since he wants to do so much of his own thing. But the dude wasn't signed as a 'solo artiste'). YES he wouldn't be what he is, without being intensely Ktrained from raw material, and also getting a lot of individual exposure because of the lawsuit publicity. (i live in Canada, but grew up in Asia, and visit every year including yearly trips to Seoul). Perhaps it's also because he's Cdn ... if used to the NAmerican ways here and the laidback, almost lazy whatever (deadlines can s'times be changed) way they do things ... Compared to the way the expectations run in Korea, or how strict-tight the ship is run there, he would find it stifling. SM Entertainment is also a little known among the agencies ... it's sometimes jokingly called SadoMasochism (after BDSM). Kris Wu gives off Edison vibes, in movies I have seen him in.
He sounds like a hands-on fun type of dad. I wonder if in real life he's like his Mike Kwong character who's so sweet to surprise Paris with the bag she wanted so badly. Aimee and the kids are very lucky.
@elizabeth They married on 20 November, so they missed the thunderstorms that hit Melbourne and rest of Victoria on the weekend of 1-3 December.
This Ho, ho family is one messed up family. Goes to show that money does not buy happiness. Anyone who gets involved with that family seems to become curseds, unhappy and blighted. Sounds just like the British Royal Family, jewelry, property and money but nothing else.
Best actor: Kenneth Ma Best actress: Louise Lee Best Supporting actor: Vincent Wong Best supporting actress: Ali Lee Favorite actor: Ruco Chan Favorite actress: Nancy Wu Best Couple: Joel Chan & Elaine Yiu Most improved actor: Benjamin Yuen Most improved actress; Moon Lau Best Drama: Heart of Greed 3
@unknown No one would think of Chris Lai when thinking about Heart of Greed. It’s basic!
@m0m0 I think you might be right – with TVB’s usual track record, Best Series will likely either go to Unholy Alliance or Line Walker 2 (most likely the latter given the Mainland China connection, since TVB wants to promote the Mainland/HK co-production angle). The main reason for delaying the anniversary awards this year was to include My Ages Apart and Heart of Greed 3, but neither series is doing that well ratings-wise (HOG’s ratings combined across platforms was only around 21 points this week – that’s REALLY bad considering the number includes online ratings – if the ratings sink below 20 points, then my guess is HOG3 will definitely be out of contention for any award)…from a popularity/word of mouth standpoint, MAA is doing a better job than HOG3, but still nowhere near all the “hype” that was generated when TUA and LW2 aired. This year will probably be the first time in my 20 years of watching the anniversary awards (starting from the year it started in 1997) that I have no interest whatsoever in the awards show. In previous years, even if I didn’t like any of the main categories, there was always at least 1 category (Best Supporting Actor) that had nominees I could root for, but this year, even that category sucks for the most part (and we already know TVB is going to give the award to Joel, regardless of whether he is deserving of it or not).
best drama is definately going to line walker 2 although the excorcist meter was way better. given the history of tvb, they tend to be so predictable, always giving awards to the the grand shows instead of the underdogs.
Asking Kris if he was still in contact with EXO, or if they are now off to their separate ways, Kris said, “Yeah.” uh what...?
Favorite male character: Vincent Wong Favorite female character: Ali Lee/Elena Kong Most improved actor: Matthew Ho Most improved actress: Sisley Choi/Moon Lau/Roxanne Tong
@jimmyszeto You don't like him?
my pick: best actor - kenneth ma (the exorcist's meter) best actress -kristal tin (destination nowhere) best supporting actor - joel chan (the unholy alliance) best supporting actress - susan tse (the exorcist's meter) best drama - the exorcist's meter
@unknown No one cares about Chris Lai. He made no difference to the previous instalment. He wouldn’t bring anything to the table if casted in this series.
I hope Elena Kong can be nominated in top 5. Although I think her chances of winning best actress is slim, but hopefully she'll win most popular actress :) I also wish Louis Cheung wasn't frozen by TVB - his performance in My Ages Apart deserves a nomination!
@jimmyszeto I agree with this list!!!
My Dearly Sinful Mind was a pretty intriguing drama. Grace Wong was great in it. Kinda sad it didn't get any buzz.
Ww@hannah Thanks. I am just so sick and tired of everyone putting Gillian down. She deserves a second chance . She was treated like crap not that long ago by a getting ugly pretty boy ido who thinks she is beneath him. His life is filled with so much immorality but he has avoided the scandals. The women always get punished. The chinese men refuse to date her and netizens complain that Gillian would not date chinese or HK men. Then her collegues shun her or avoid her because they think they are better than her. This arrogant clown who harassed Gillian better learn that you can't hide your true colors or your sick life forever. He should learn from his fellow countryman and celeb, who also is married and has kids. He supposedly has a scandal free life, but HIV don't lie. No one should disrespect Gillian because of the computer incident, especially the ebiz folk. Time has a way of exposing buried skeletons. Just ask the ask the tall, HIV singer, or Harvey Wienstien. Give GC a chance
I've only watched one TVB series this year, which was Legal Mavericks, and although I enjoyed the actors' performances, none of them really stood out to me so I don't really care about the awards this year. EXCEPT I really, really want Jimmy Au to win Best Supporting Actor. Just because he's good. I didn't watch UA but I know he must've been good.
@unknown hi killer. So now you're your other persona unknown. I know your style man cos you're so fond of tagging many people in one post. I see that you haven't outgrown your copy and paste habit yet except now it's not about your pet hate Ruco Chan lol.
@elizabeth me too. I couldn't stand the first instalment with the stupid father-son laughter.
@bubbletea well said
My Vote: Best Actor - Kenneth Ma Best Actress- Jessica Hsuan Fav Character - Vincent Wong Fav Actress- Nancy or Kristal Best Drama - TME Best Support Actress- Elaine yu Best Support Actor- Joel Best improve actor- Hubert Wu Best improve actress-Sisley Choi
@passingby @mambamentality @jimmyszeto They've missed out Chris lai. I wonder why he didn't join the sequel of Heart of greed 3? It's not that I'm against them adding new cast members but without all the original cast members, the drama doesn't feel like Heart of greed anymore.
yea man...they keep recycle the storylines just like Burning Flame, Forensic Heroes, Healing Hands.
I hate moaners. No one put a knife in your neck to sign a contract with them. They trained you very well and provide you with a platform to start. You used them as they used you. Dont complain after eating the rice they serve.
Wow...How can Sisley even make it to the nominated list as Best Actress when her acting is not even mature and superb at all? and Grace Wong was put as a Supporting Actress in the List instead of Sisley Choi who should be put there instead? Whoa TVB, I sense some bias and huge favoritism here.
My bet Best actor: Vincent Wong Best actress: Jessica Supporting actor: Joel Supporting actress: Grace Best drama: Line walker 2
Best actor: Michael Miu, Bobby Au, Kenneth Ma or Moses Chan Best actress: Nina Paw, Elena Kong, Jessica Hsuan or Michelle Yim Best Supporting actor: Jimmy Au, Vincent Wong or Ben Wong Best supporting actress: Alice Chan, Grace Wong or Ali Lee Favorite actor: Joel Chan, Ruco Chan or Louis Cheung Favorite actress: Elaine Yiu, Nancy Wu or Kristal Tin Most improved actor: Owen Cheung, Matt Yeung, Pakho Chau or Benjamin Yuen Most improved actress; Moon Lau, Roxanne Tong, Jacqueline Wong or Sisley Choi Best Drama: Line Walker 2 or The Unholy Alliance
Best Drama for me is definitely TEM. Im rewatching it and am amazed that right from ep1 the drama dived straight into the story instead of beating about the bush. Ar the same time im picking up LW2 where i left off. The story felt so messy and all over the place. Worse of all was Priscilla's cringeworthy acting.

Best Actor: Kenneth Ma Best Actress: Jessica Hsuan/Kristal Tin Best Supporting Actor: Joel Chan Best Supporting Actress: Elaine Yiu/Grace Wong
@melia880 Agreed! I used to cringe at every Sisley's performance when she first started. But this year (2017) I have not much complains as she is definitely improving by large. I like her a lot in Legal Mavericks!
@melia880 yeah i have no idea how Jacq won in SG. A lot of SG ppl were wondering honestly. I definitely prefer Wong Hoi Ching over Mani for sure even if it's BSA category!
@elizabeth Have you noticed what they do at the breakfast scenes? They still eat hotdog sausages and eggs , despite being in a multi-million dollar home!
My pick: Best Actor: Kenneth Ma, Best Actress: Nina Paw, Best Supporting Actor: Joel Chan, Best Supporting Actress: Grace Wong.
@melia880 I agree! Sisley improved so much. She deserves the Most Improved award the most, but it seems unlikely that she'll get nominated this year since she wasn't nominated for this award last year :( If not Sisley, I'm good with Moon Lau or Roxanne Tong winning as well.
@elizabeth I’m definitely with you! I’m not sure what part of “freelance artist” TVB doesn’t understand, but management is obviously messed up in the head when they feel the need to “freeze” an artist (Power Chan) who isn’t even contracted to them! (though ok, I guess they've been messed up in the head for awhile already, since this isn't the first time they've done something like this). And they wonder why they’ve gotten so much criticism in recent years! Well, if they would stop making stupid moves for once and do something that’s constructive and actually MAKES SENSE, then maybe, just maybe, people would start respecting them again. I won’t be watching Justice Pao (partly because of the Power thing but also because I have no interest in watching a silly comedic reboot of a legendary franchise), but you bet I’ll be watching the ViuTV series that Power filmed, lol!
Not on the list, but was thinking about Most Improved, and hope that MI Female Actress goes to Sisley or Moon. Moon actually deserved it last year, in my opinion, and Ali would have been better off getting it this year. I'm surprised Sisley was never nominated for Most Improved (and doesn't seem she will be this year either), but if you want to talk about improvement in terms of amount of improvement, Sisley beats out ALL of her competition. Moon and Ali already had potential, but Sisley started off pretty terribly and now she's gotten SO much better (whether her acting is considered "good" will vary depending on who you ask).
It's disappointing kevin isn't nominated at all. He was solid in DN. Although tvb won't give it to him as he has left, a mention would be nice. Same for Louis Cheung. Hope they do Kristal justice this time. She shld have won this year's starhub over Ali.
@hewnamwong I think they can only use images of their own artistes.
@llwy12 I am boycotting this version in protest of TVB freezing Power Chan and kicking him out of the project.
Nice wedding. They look very happy together. I wonder where they got married as Victoria has been flooding in the past few weeks.
@kirigiri I feel that most of the villains in 1st and 2nd installments were Ok to be forgiven. Susanna in the 1st series just felt very insecure as the second wife and felt unloved and robbed of what she could have had and was misguided by her lover. I think she was forgiven but the family dynamics would never be the same again. Michelle in 2nd series also had a valid reason for being forgiven. She did have an affair behind Louise's back but Ha Yu was also to blame. And she did work very hard over the years to build the business and Ha Yu really just slacked off to eat soft rice so I don't get why he had the face to fight her in court for assets after the divorce. Kate, I don't why she was forgiven since her reasons were so blah.
I still hate the awkward clapping and rhyming phrases. No normal family acts like that.
I think the audience likes bad boys but doesn't like jerks. Bad boys does not equal jerks. Sheldon was a 1st class jerk who cheated on his wife and his friend and still felt he did no wrong as he was smart. And when he did regret it, he blamed it all on his mistress for ruining his family and hurting his wife, and then he got forgiven as if nothing had happened. Jerk! I am sure the audience will still love a well-written villain or a grey-area character who had valid reasons for doing evil stuff and can feel for his pain or conflicts of the heart. People like Siu Ma as they can connect with him. As for Kenneth, he has always been popular with the audience as he has a healthy image and he is fun as well. He is not cool looking but I do feel he is good looking, even if he has that silly goofy look at times.
Roger is ageing naturally and gracefully. He looks fine as he is. He can still pass for someone 10 years younger than his current age. If nothing is broken, don't fix it.
@coralie Which husband? Ronald?
I don't like "Destination Nowhere" nor am I very fond of Kristal, but I do think that she did a great job with the complicated role. She was very convincing in the last episode. I hope she does get it for DN as she showed her acting chops. Why on earth is Rosina Lam on the list for BN? Best Actor is too hard for me as I like Ben, Michael, Vincent, Kenneth and Moses. Moses is actually quite good in MAA. I will be happy if any one of them win. I liked Susan Tse in TEM, even though she does do her normal overacting, butr there was a lot of solid emotional scenes that I thought she deserved a mention for. The other nominess were not very memorable to me. Speaking of Moon Lau, I have a feeling she may get the Improvement award. My pick for Supporting Male is Owen Cheung as I felt he did show a lot of improvement in his acting this year. I also liked Matthew Ho in AGASAAE, but he is not nominated for it I really liked "Tiger Mom Blues" as a series and most people did a good job in it. Elena and Ben were leading the series solidly. If "Heart of Greed 3" or "The Unholy Alliance" gets Best Series, I will cry.
Honestly TVB's Top 20 for nominations is complete BS because how many of these are actually memorable performances? I could barely recall that Alice Chan was in LW2 and Fred Cheng on that list of BSA is an embarrassment (I'm sorry if I'm being harsh) and disrespect for Lo Lok Lam. If we want to put credit where it deserves.... imo LLL is worthy of BSA. If not, Owen Cheung is a solid pick to promote the younger actors. I get that there's hype for Joel Chan.... but honestly his role was pretty one sided and didn't have much character struggle. I fail to see how his role is BSA worthy. Tbb may give him MFMC (Though I truly believe that Ben Yuen deserved it this year instead of last year. Though that's a good fight between him, Vincent, and Kenneth.) I swear the Best Supporting Actress award always goes to someone with a role that's not very memorable (likely they deserved it because of years of improvement). IMO, I think Samantha Ko should be in the Top 5. If Sisley was in for BSA instead of BA she might get further into the Nominations. As usual, there's not much competition for BSActress. Best Actress.... wow so tvb just took Ali out of contention by nominating her role in My Ages Apart.... Looks like it's going to Jessica because peeps don't remember Kristal's epic performance in DN. That was some personality twist that I think Kristal deserves the BA for! Best Actor.... Can we just give it to Vincent, because dude has been carrying tvb on his shoulders for whichever drama he is in. I know Kenneth was good and all.... But I don't see how he was outstanding, so to speak. The Unholy Alliance better not win anything. That was a poor . poor series and no one (maybe Joel) should be nominated. Seriously. I would be so so happy if a low hype series like Tiger Mom Blues won something, because that drama was so natural and so genuine. Elena def deserves at least a Top 5 nomination.
I don't know which is worse, Gillian's singing or her acting. However, the poor girl has been through a lot and has not had much luck with love. She is constantly criticised for chosing non chinese boyfriends. HELLO??. The chinese men refuse to date her. Yes she was part of the unfortunate scandal that was not her fault. It was not. These people who judge her and ostracise her better be worthy of living in glass houses. I wish Gillian well with this latest relationship.
Jimmy Au should also be nominated in My Favourite Actor category and he will stand a chance to win compared to BSA.
Some of the nominations left me scratching my head. Carlo Ng BSA for TUA? He had hardly anything to do in that drama! Jacqueline Wong BA for Provocateur? Tot she won for that role as BSA in Starhub but now she's competing as lead actress in that drama? Why isn't Ali nominated for her winning role in Starhub awards? Instead she's entered for her role in MAA? My pick for BA - tough choice betw Kenneth Ma and Michael Miu but Michael has the edge since he won in Astro. Vincent not likely to win since he didnt even manage to win astro despite being first off the block in Starhub awards. Best actress wont be Ali cos strangely she's now nominated for another role. I'd like to see Kristal win this time. Her role is more challenging than Jessica's which as someone put it is just basically Jessica playing Jessica. All i remember from that drama is Jessica looking p-issdd all the time. BSA James Ng and Susan Tse.
Sometimes men admire a woman for more than a beautiful face. Some women are blessed with a beautiful face but are so devious, calculating, malicious and downright manipulative that they are what men want to run away from. Then they are pretty face women who are as dull as a doornail and thick as a plank. Anyone knows any woman like that?, haha wink, wink. Some women are not pretty but can attract men like flies. They can liven up a room like a beacon and command the attention of handsome, educated, well spoken rich men. One such woman was Wallis Simpson. The dashing, handsome rich king of the commonwealth and England gave up the throne to marry this plain American divorcee when he could have had his pick from an European princess, or someone from the aristocracy. Just goes to show. For the record, Crystal Fung is not hard on the eyes at all. Very attractive woman indeed.
How the world Tony Hung and Sisley Choi it make to the top for best actor? Must be kidding me like I say I don’t know what tvb is thinking sometimes. Here are my 3 top for best actor and actress: Michael Miu, Bobby Au and Vincent. Nina Paw, Elena Kong and Michelle Yim.
My pick: Best Actor - Kenneth Ma (The Exorcist's Meter) Best Actress - Kristal Tin (Destination Nowhere) Best Supporting Actor - Joel Chan (The Unholy Alliance) Best Supporting Actress - Susan Tse (The Exorcist's Meter) I find both Vincent and Kenneth's performances this year are equally good. Hence, when it comes to that, the other factor to consider is how much they deserved the award, and how senior are they in the industry. Hence, my pick is Kenneth. I agree that he should have won in 2012 for 'The Hippocratic Crush' (end up Wayne Lai winning again for 'The Confidant' that year surprisingly). Vincent has many stellar roles in recent years and I'm sure he is fast to get to this best actor award very soon. Although 'Destination Nowhere' is aired very early this year, but I still remember well how powerful the acting done by Kristal in that series. It's a very challenging role and she nailed it. Supporting actor will be fight between Joel and Owen Cheung. I'm okay with any of them to win. Supporting actress...I'm also surprised that Moon Lau didn't get a nomination here but Alice Chan did. TVB always sucks in choosing the nominees. I will pick Susan Tse because this year's competition for supporting actress is quite weak. And so far, I only remembered the many emotional scenes Susan Tse had to handle in The Exorcist's Meter and she did them all very well.
My Ages Apart is surprisingly a genuinely crazy hilarious drama! It's stupidly witty and the actors are great. Moses really nailed his character and after his boring roles in Ghost Relativity series he shines again as a comedic actor. Ali is really showing some BA potential because she's totally owning her scenes. Bobby is just pleasant to watch all the time. I hope TVB doesn't forget Kristal for the nominations because she's been solid in Destination Nowhere and in this one as well.
@piggygrace Yeah, come to think of it, Wong Hoi Ching was more a leading character than Jacqueline Wong's Mani. I mean, I doubt Jacqueline Wong will even be top 5 let alone win it, so I suppose it's not a huge deal... but she did win BSA over Elaine Yiu, so I'm just shocked people remember her role at all (because I sure didn't haha).
Best Actor: Vincent Wong for Legal Mavericks Yes, many of the cases and story-development were mo-lei-tau and made no sense. Yes, there were plot holes. But, that’s the script’s fault, not Vincent’s. I felt that this was one of his best performances to date and he continues to surprise me with his versatility. He carried the series well and had good chemistry with most of his costars (especially Law Lok Lam, who I will talk more about later on). Vincent and Owen are also a duo I’d like to see again. His chemistry with Ali was a little bland though - but I blame that on the lame character development of Never Wong. Best Actress: Elena Kong for Tiger Mom Blues It’s really been a weak year for the ladies of TVB dramas. Of course, this has nothing to do with their actual acting ability but more to do with how boring the characters have been written to be. Jessica Hsuan is an A+ actress but somehow, writers of Line Walker: The Prelude have managed to make her so irrelevant that I almost forgot she was in the series. Out of this list, Elena Kong had the most interesting and real character. She wasn’t an easy character to like, as her tiger-mama ways were often frustrating to watch. However, it’s that realness of having a character flaw that made her character more life-like. I’ve also quite enjoyed Ali’s performance in My Ages Apart so far. Her chemistry with Moses is great! P.S. How the hell did Jacqueline Wong get the nomination?? Her nomination should have gone to Grace Wong for My Dearly Sinful Mind… Best Supporting Actor: NO ONE ON THE NOMINATED LIST and here’s why I’m sorely disappointed that Law Lok Lam (Legal Mavericks) and Mat Yeung (Bet Hur) didn’t make the cut. Law Lok Lam continues to be one of my favorite green-leaf actors because he has such an extreme range of emotions. He can be “perfect dad,” “evil corporate man,” “demented stock market genius,” and in this case, “ALS patient begging his blind son for forgiveness.” Every Law Lok Lam scene had me in tears and pulled at my heart strings. His portrayal was so realistic and you could tell that he did a ton of research in preparation for the role. As for Mat Yeung, I am glad he got nominated for My Dearly Sinful Mind. However, that was definitely not his best performance of the year, as he was EXCELLENT in Bet Hur. I didn’t actually watch all of Bet Hur since it was a garbage series. But I did catch a few episodes in passing. The scene where he discovered his subordinate’s corpse was done SO well and some of the best acting I’ve ever seen from him. The level of disbelief and denial he expressed gets 2 big thumbs up from me!! Although, I suppose my opinion is extremely biased, as I didn’t actually finish Burning Hands, Destination Nowhere, My Unfair Lady, AGASAAE, The Unholy Alliance, or Line Walker: The Prelude. Brian Tse did well in LW from what I did watch and Mark Ma is great in Come Home Love: Lo and Behold but neither performance is good enough for Best Supporting Actor. Best Supporting Actress: Again, no one on this nominated list. Toby Chan gets some recognition for her somewhat-daring appearance in Legal Mavericks but not BSA-worthy. I’m actually shocked by some of the nominations in general. As someone else noted, Alice Chan showed up in LW for a total of what? 5 minutes? Katy Kung has also only gotten about 15 minutes of total screen time in My Ages Apart so far. Tracy Chu’s performance in Legal Mavericks was a huge letdown in my opinion - especially compared to what I know she’s been capable of. I hear Elaine Yiu put up a good performance in The Unholy Alliance but I didn’t watch enough of it to see. Grace Wong did pretty well in A General, a Scholar, and a Eunuch from the episodes I did watch but was pretty similar to her role in My Dearly Sinful Mind (albeit, a little less psychotic and sociopathic). A bit disappointed that Moon Lau didn’t get the nomination as she definitely outshone Mandy Wong in The Exorcist’s Meter.
MY TOP 3 for each category out of the nomination list: Best Actor: Vincent Wong (LM) Michael Miu (LW2) Kenneth Ma (TEM) Best Actress: Jessica Hsuan (MUL) Kristal Tin (DN) Ali Lee (MAA) Best Supporting Actor: Owen Cheung (LM) Joel Chan (TUA) Ram Chiang (TEM) Best Supporting Actress: Elaine Yiu (TUA) Grace Wong (GSE) and maybe either Samantha Ko (MUL) or Sharon Chan (HAG) -- cant decide on the 3rd much. Oh well I am still shocked at Jacq Wong being nominated for BA category. I just can't digest this fact. Oh well.
@melia880 I am wondering the same thing!~ How on earth did Jacq Wong get BA nom? It should be BSA for her! Ali was co-leading too. Ugh TVB is blind sometimes. And I am surprised Grace Wong didn't get nominated for "Wong Hoi Ching" in Mind Hunter? But I guess she got the BSA nomination for "Tai Zhi Fei" for General Scholar Eunuch.
@melia880 agree to every word you just said. I am definitely leaning towards more towards Vincent for his performance in Legal Mavericks.
@lewismcchan Oh wow I didn't notice this. I suppose she technically still was a supporting actress though, and it still makes more sense than Jacqueline who is actually NOT the leading actress of that drama... but yeah she had like two episodes of screen time only, so it is odd. Probably had too many nominee spots and not enough supporting actresses to fill the spots.
@kolo "Variety in roles doesnt mean he has performed well in all those roles he did" Actually that line describes Kenneth more than Vincent, in my opinion. I actually am a big fan of Kenneth, but he has had his fair share of bad roles - especially the ones where he's whiny or annoying. I can only think of 2 or 3 where I thought he really did a stellar job (On Call 36 being one of them - agreed he should have won that year). Vincent has actually been delivering every single series since becoming lead. You can argue he has less variety, but he's been the shining point of all of them. I also don't personally believe that previous roles and number of years in TVB should factor into whether someone wins BA... it's awarded yearly so what should be taken into account that year are their roles that year, not the number of years they've been in TVB. Imo, it makes an award meaningless if less deserving people can receive it just because of "seniority". Personally, I'm rooting for either Vincent or Kenneth. I liked Vincent's performance a bit more, but I still enjoyed Kenneth's role in TEM and would be happy to see him win. This is definitely a role he deserves to win for.
@coralie variety in roles doesnt mean he has performed well in all those roles he did. kenneth has also done many different roles and i think even more than vincent. if vincent earn his stripe than kenneth even more because he has served tvb 17 years already now. he did more memorable roles than vincent. vincent's popularity just begun this year after legal maverick, before that he didnt have any memorable roles. kenneth should have win tv king with on call 36 hour. and this year he is the best. even moses and sam gor is not his match.
Well it looks like as long as they're not 3rd line+ artist, their names will pop up here. Vincent Wong has my vote for Best Actor - hands down. Given the depth and variety of roles over the yrs and not just this yr, I truly think he's earned his stripes. I like Kenneth and I think he's very popular right now esp after TEM. But without TEM, I dunno if I would put him on this list. Best Actress - Ali Lee might be new, but she's also taken on some really interesting roles this year too. A good variety which she nailed. I'm not sure she can do the same type of acting required of say, Kristal Tin, but she's done really well this yr. Elena Kong would be on here too, but she's not as hyped as the rest of the group, so chances of winning are slim. Best Supporting Actress - I like Moon, surprised she's not on this list Best Supporting Actor - Ram Chiang simply because he's marvelous in any drama he's ever been in. But maybe "green-leaf" award would suit him better now. Joel is good, but his role didn't have a lot of conflict. I would put Owen Cheung just because his role had so much baggage which he owned. Louis Cheung, though, has been a remarkably versatile actor these past few yrs. I would put my votes on him had he not been frozen.
@siro112233 Instead of Alice Chan, Moon Lau should be nominated in BSA. Alice appeared in the first two episodes and died immediately.
Top 5 best actor will be;: Kennethe Ma Moses Chan Vincent Wong Ruco Chan Michael Miu Althought I think Frankie did a great Job too. But it will be those 5. My vote is for Kenneth!!!! Go MaMing!!!!! Best actrice top 5 Kristal Tin Ali Lee Nancy Wu Jessica Hsuan Mandy Wong I think Its to Soon to give Ali such a big Prize. Even I think she is the greatest Competitor for Kristal. But You never know. Jessica has won in Malaysia. My vote is for Crazy murderer mother Haha!! Kristal!! BS- Actor Joël Chan Mathhew Ho Owen Cheung Ram Chiang Jimmy Au It will defenitley Joël!! Sorry for Matthew. But Joël deserve it!! Go Joël!!!! BS- Actress Elaine Yiu Samantha Ko Susan Tse Zoie Tam Grave Wong How did Moon don’t get a nomination For BSActrice?!!! Not Best Actrice I understand. But no BSA?!! She will be Elaine biggelt threat!!! A Well... Elaine will win!! Kent And Kate are awesome!!!!
@melia880 Same thing....how can Alice Chan get nominated as the best supporting actress from Line Walker 2? She appeared at the beginning and died immediately.
I have to admit that I agree with the critics. Only the old veterans make it watchable, as most of the younger cast aren't good.
im not impressed with vincent wong's acting in legal maverick. the make up department did a great job to make him looks perfect blind. if the disguise is 100% then ppl will think he has good acting but actually the make over help him a lot.
This is the only drama I've watched with Bobby in it where Bobby doesn't steal the show; actually I find his "complaining" quite tiresome at times. For me, Moses steals the show; his reactions are SO FUNNY yet so consistent. I also find Ali very funny, and Louis has always been a good actor. I also quite like the performances from the younger bunch, like Anjaylia, Louisa, and Dickson.
Why not both? Im sure we're all needy at some point. I think it's quite unfair to judge who's needier based off interviews and everything. Best of luck to Gillian though! This girl is so unlucky with love.
How did Jacqueline Wong get nominated for Best Actress for Provocateurs...? I was already finding her BSA win in Singapore very suspicious (and frankly, undeserved).. and now she is getting a BA nomination for a role that was neither outstanding/interesting, nor actually "leading". Even Roxanne Tong outshone her in Provocateurs. Even more strangely, Fred Cheng got a Supporting nomination for the same drama. Gallen is obviously the main lead, but surely Fred is considered a lead if Jacqueline is...
@vlol I used to think this dude was sooooo HOT but when I recently saw him on utube videos - I thought to myself WAAAA....he's only 36? ahhaah lol...Golly why do I think he's way over 40? hahaha Lol...
I don't think it's comparable who's needier? haha Lol... I do think this Gillian is getting more desperate perhaps due to her scandal w/EC that mad her so. But life is unexpected thou, this twins girl is clearly more successful and popular than that Bobo Chan who was even more saddening as that the previous rich dude dumped her over the incident but she had no problem finding a husband so sometimes you just never know. Perhaps bc she is more popular it is even more difficult for her to find that Mr. Right. Both twins girl thou sound like they are needy, can't say who's needier but definitely the seems the kind who really need to find that Mr. Right in order to be happy even thou one of them had been there done that.
@shimmerstars I read it somewhere or was on utube that they have been friends for 15 years or so. I didn't even know Benjamin Yuen has been in showbiz for that long. haha... But I do love them in LW Prelude.
Vincent Wong – Legal Mavericks - I want him to be nominated for EU not this blink lawyer series but oh well...... good luck
@dramas4me SAME! that's why I had to reply to agree because I have been feeling the same. I personally don't like either or. I agree that Zitao is especially arrogant from what I have seen on talk shows and all. Kris seems arrogant in pictures but seems a little more down to earth (ish) in talk shows. LuHan definitely gives me the most down to earth vibe (but still doesnt change the fact that I still think all 3 are quite overrated xD)
Roger is fine as he is! Pakho and Benjamin - nice to know they're great friends now. Maybe Benjamin can convince him to join his Crazy Runners group! hahaha
As in Shawn's announcement "Met the right person at the right time......... Thank you for filling my world with so much positive energy, happiness, and laughter. My world has become a simpler and happier place because of you" He has met someone, this being Sarah that has now completed his life and making him find true love. Sarah is absolutely blessed to find Shawn that will love her and take care of her as she had wished. They seem like a beautiful and loving couple. Their wedding was completely hush hush! I actually live in Melbourne and did not hear anything at all about this. They did well in keeping it super low key. It looks like they got married in Yarra Valley ( which is the winery region of Victoria). Its great they chose Melbourne as a place to get married, maybe because its not a place where high profile celebrities would select like UK, Europe or the Asian islands like Bali which so many have had their weddings. Sometimes simple is always the best. I wonder if they will settle down in Hong Kong or if Shawn would move to Taiwan? I've never even heard of Sarah Wang - she must be a mediocre model in Taiwan. Does anyone know any history about her (besides the details of her dad and the leather belt business)?
@coralie i consider grace chan pretty and truly a miss hk champion breed. it's been disappointing after her....
@m0m0 In my opinion, Crystal's not drop dead gorgeous, but still pretty, so I'm not surprised by the high number (especially because high school can be cliquey so the same group of guys can be pursuing one girl). There were girls in my high school who I'd say were a bit above average (less attractive than Crystal), and they had a lot of pursuers.
why don have eddie cheung and michael miu
@msxie0714 I agree with you.
@m0m0 Thank you for the information. I didn't know that. I don't care for him, so I don't pay attention to his news. :)
@aiya Nah...Crystal is Miss HK 2016. buckteeth is Miss HK 2017.
@m0m0 who do you find pretty? (not trying to be offensive, only curious!)
@coralie whatever floats your boat. No point arguing further.
i think VW can do both. KM cannot do both. that's my argument, overall.
@vlol it's hard to say. before her scandal, nobody thought she was the needy type. after her scandal, well, her chances of obtaining a normal relationship dropped dramatically. maybe she's more needy now because of what happened or maybe she's always been needy. I can't say. as for colorful backgrounds, in comparison to Charlene? her exes had really colorful background too!
Gillian def. seem more needy to me over Charlene. Wish her luck for sure.
This is surprising.. didn't even know he was dating this girl. Good luck to her..
Roger still looks great!!! Don't touch up your face please!
Congrats to Shawn! It’s about time he settle down. Nicholas already went through one marriage and has two boys and Edison started a family too. Wow, I remember in the early 2000’s when Shawn, Nicholas, and Edison were all heartthrobs!
@coralie I think between the two, Gillian is definitely more needy. She seems like someone who craves for love or to be love. I remember when she was dating Tyler, she had him followed her everywhere. Now that she’s dating the new guy, he’s following her everywhere too. Idk, Gillian’s new boyfriend has such a colorful background too. Hopefully, she’s truly happy and not settling just because she’s older.
@m0m0 ya Kenneth is well rounded in everything and looks good as well. He has been hot commodity for a long time. Tons of girls in and out of the the industry want him.
@coralie yeah different strokes for different folks. You like mama drama, i prefer subtlety. All ok as long as we like it.
That plastic surgery addict should just leave Roger alone lol!
I recalled Ruco and Raymond Wong were in a lot of dramas together. Ben and Pakho are the new duo?
@llwy12 They've missed out Chris lai. I wonder why he didn't join the sequel of Heart of greed 3? It's not that I'm against them adding new cast members but without all the original cast members, the drama doesn't feel like Heart of greed anymore.
@dramas4me Just be glad they didn't choose angelababy
I hope this drama won’t be disappointed. I think Roger looked fine don’t think he needed a plastic surgery because he’s got a big Mouth and wrinkled? Of you you get wrinkles once you age right? Looks like Tavia leave her nose alone this time it doesn’t seem that long like before hopefully she doesn’t mess with her nose again. It seems like Benjamin been in a lots of drama lately.
@funnlim I think China investment factor is a possibility. We never know what truly happened in the back room.
It seems like she’s into a younger guy. He must have the money for sure.
Wow. I’m really shocked about this news because I always thought he’s a single guy or a bachelor guy however you called it. So the couple dated one year only and decided to tied the knot? Shawn is a lucky guy congratulations.
i stopped watching after episode 1. like the article said, the dialog seemed forced and not natural. the plot of over dramatized. everything seem to be too lavish. and of course, same old plot....
@coralie well with all that make up, it's not difficult. but i still don't think she's pretty.
@xystus i agree with you. I caught up a few more eps yesterday and they weren't that funny as previous eps. Probably just going thru a dull patch. I have to say Moses is really good in this drama. Never thought of him as a good actor before.
Wait! I am really confused now. Isn't the current Miss HK is "Miss Buckteeth" who created all the hoopla? Did they make a switcheroo to save face?
Lau Ka Ho did an interview with Ming Pao today where he responds to some of the criticisms towards the series, especially the part about the recycled storyline and characters. He basically stated that they (meaning him, production team, TVB) could’ve gone with trying something new if they had wanted to, as it’s not like they don’t have the ability to do so, but he insists that’s not what the audiences wanted (he made the assertion that “deliberately striving for something new and different is not necessarily a good thing” – this is a direct quote from him in that interview). He said that it was obvious to them based on the popularity and success of HOG 1 and 2 that audiences wanted the familiarity of the first two installments and that they are merely putting into HOG 3 the same elements that audiences liked in HOG 1 and 2 (family arguing/infighting and reconciling, fighting over inheritance, etc.). He said this was further confirmed when he and his wife returned to TVB and had mentioned they wanted to do HOG 3, the reaction from friends and colleagues was overwhelmingly positive, with everyone saying that it was a great idea and that they had been waiting a long time for it. Basically, he insists that he clearly understands what audiences want and with HOG 3, he gave them exactly what they wanted. As for the whole “golden phrases/lines” thing feeling forced and unnatural this time around, LKH said that from the beginning, even with the first 2 installments, they had never deliberately said those were golden phrases. It was the audiences who dubbed the dialogue as “golden phrases” due to how much they were able to relate to what the characters were saying in the scenes. He said golden phrases or not, the most important thing was using those lines accurately and at the appropriate moments in the series. Based on the above, you guys can formulate your opinion however you wish. It’s this kind of antiquated thinking that leads TVB to continue churning out the same types of series over and over and over again. This kind of brings me back to something that came up several years ago back at the height of the television wars between TVB and HKTV. It came to light back then that TVB had stopped doing audience surveys decades ago and therefore had lost touch with the newer generation of audiences who didn’t necessarily have the same “criteria” for series that previous audiences did. Back then, TVB justified not doing the surveys by claiming that their target audience continues to be housewives and they already know what they want (versus HKTV, who not only did plenty of audience surveys, they also conducted focus groups with audience participation, even making changes and tweaking their series with audience feedback in mind, in the hopes that their series would be advise close as possible to what audiences truly wanted to see). As for the golden phrases thing – I will give LKH credit for that, as what he said is true to some extent, as a lot of times, the screenwriters/producers don’t deliberately say “oh, let’s put this line in here because it will surely become a golden line”….ultimately, it’s how audiences respond to the dialogue that makes it a “golden phrase/line” (though of course the media hyping it up also helps too).
@nomad822 independence is important but I think having a partner to go thru life's hardship together is also something worthwhile to strive for. I think it's just default for most actresses to marry ppl who are renowned given that they're pretty famous themselves. They all run in the same circle. Charlene is the same way - actually I think Charlene is much more controlling and needy than even Gillian cus I rmb reading this article once where Chapman To called her a b*atch for always harrassing her husband at the time and controlling where and who he hangs out with
@m0m0 she's much prettier than avg for sure
I've been following this series since episode 1 til the latest 23rd, and I have to say it's getting really dull and stupid. Plot is literally all over the place with no consistent flow. The only thing worth noting from this series so far is Moses Chan's good acting. Totally different from his previous series, very vibrant and refreshing. But apart from that, I really can't stress enough on the lack of good plot flow, despite its good humour from time to time.
@dramas4me if you pay attention to their news. Z.tao has been known to be arrogant. you will notice it too if you dig up his videos on youtube. Cris looks snobbish but he's more personable if you look up his videos. one in particular that i remember if that back in their exo days. they invited 4 members, luhan, cris, z-tao and one other member on stage. a little girl got the honor to give each of them a kiss. z.tao was the last one in line, and after the girl kissed him, he wiped it off his fact in front of the mirror like he was disgusted. cris and luhan were okay, they looked happy.
hum...quite surprising...she's not pretty ar.... miss hk since 2014 have been quite ordinary....
I don't know much about Twins, other than the very cursory and the news of Gillian's dates (since explosive news with Edison) . She's also got way more news about dates (just look at the lineup) than acting-singing achievements. The overall feel throughout all the reads - is she seems kinda materialistic, and a needy (desperate to be loved, taken care of) Her dates all seem have to be someone (ie citing a Korean who knows folks like Lee Byung-hun when Tyler Kwon is relatively UNknown in Korea. I have been an avid Kdrama/movie fan since 2010 to current), some wealthy-rich dude, or a doctor or whatever. She's very sweet looking ... I hope she finds her own SELF-worth and independence. A guy should only only bonus-icing on the cake ... but that cake should be solidly HERself first.
kenneth ma's not handsome?! he's pretty handsome in my eyes. also keep in mind that kenneth's a more than a few years older than bosco ar. also, i think dou ming chi from meteor garden is more warm than bad wo~
@coralie most importantly, I want raw (but not ugly) acting. Very few can and/or willing to do that because the fear of overacting is just as bad as underacting.
Best drama The Exorcist’s meter Best actor Vincent Wong Best Actress Ali Lee My favourite male character Ma Kwai My favourite female character Mall Jeh Best supporting actor Owen Cheung but they will give it to Joel Chan Best supporting Actress Elaine Yiu Most improved actor Matthew Ho Most improved actress Moon Lau My favourite couple on screen Joël Chan – Elaine Yiu
@funnlim @passingby - I guess we'll just agree to disagree. I find Vincent Wong's all out acting superb and not OTT, especially given his character's quite severe rollercoaster experiences. Kenneth has always been restrained with his crying scenes, and I have yet to see him do any of that all out, no-holds bar acting. I was touched by the parental arc in TEM, but that's due to the storyline and not due to him per se, although he did contribute to the scene and performed to satisfaction. The way I feel about Kenneth is the way I feel about Jessica Hsuan (but before anyone gets offended, I think Kenneth is a better actor than Jessica). You never see her all-out act lol. You also probably never seen her cry real tears either. So I'm beyond that 'elegance' nowadays. I want real emotions, real feelings, real impact.
Best drama The Excorcist meter Best actor Doubt between Kenneth Ma Moses Chan Best actrice Kristal Tin My favourite male character Ma Kwai My favourite female character Paris Best supporting actor Joël Chan Best supporting Actress Elaine Yiu Most improved actor Hubert Wu/Matthew Ho Most improved actress Moon Lau Best theme song Hubert Wu “out of Reach” My favourite couple on screen Joël Chan - Elaine Yiu Aka K&K Still havent seen HOG 3 And BTROC 2
It is fine to copy as a lot of people are doing it in Asia or in America. But TVB should at least copy something that are not usually used, not recycling the story lines from the first two series. If they want to try something new, try to adopt American renowned novelist, Stephen King's horror stories. A lot of them can be adopted into TV series such as Carrie, Misery, The Mist, Under the Dome, It, The Stand and many, many.
This drama is really crazy fantastic!! Funny Unreal And the characters are marvelous!! Moses!! Unbelievable!! In line walker 2 you tried to make Victor the best. But now see You acting the Mike character. Its make me e dilemma.... now I have 2 favourite to be Tvb King.. Ma Kwai beware!!! Mike is now your dangereuses Competitor!!! Its been a long time that a new girl who can play so manny different kind of characters. Sexy seducer, dedicated woman, naive lawyer, confident judge And now a crazyfunnyadorable girl!! Well done This year Ali Lee!!! If “destination Nowhere” Or “the general the scholar and the eunuch” can make You win Tvb queen then My Ages Apart will make a big chance Kristal Tin for Tvb Queen!!!
His eyes caught my eye more than his body. It's so unique! No offense to Dickson who must've worked out really hard, but I barely noticed the topless part. It was all in the eyes LOL
I agreed with lyu310. For all you know they might be sleeping in separate room. The reporters are trying their best just to blow up the news.
@yummiki24 I'm with you. Blasted through the 15 epidsodes and waiting for the next 5. lol. The fact that most of the cast members are playing pretty much the same characters adds to the deja vu. Loving it tho. I may be the wrong person to ask when judging a series or movie, since I only go by my level of enjoyment. The technical stuff like writing don't matter to me. I respect where people are coming from tho. Similar atmosphere and themes as the other two series, just different setting.
@funnlim Well, one reason is probably because they don't have enough artists to feature in the calendar anymore (um, they even had to put Wu Fung and Law Lan in there this year -- not that I'm complaining since I love both of them, but if we look at the few months that actually had artists in them, majority of them are supporting artists with only a handful of leads). Another reason is probably because they did a crappy job with the pictures the recent few years when they did feature artists on them (the artists all looked like plastic play pieces in the last calendar...there was also that one year where they hired that famous designer guy to do all the makeup and all the artists ended up looking like gangsters). Another reason (and the most likely one) is that TVB is cheap and figured putting the posters in there is the safest, fastest, and cheapest route to go for the calendars. It's kind of funny because I know a few people from TVB's distributor overseas and they told me that in the past, the calendars were a hot commodity, with everyone clamoring to get one through any means possible (heck I used to collect them too, since they would save me one every year)...the past couple years though, they would try to give the calendars away for free but very few people wanted them (especially after TVB switched to putting the posters in) -- oftentimes they ended up recycling the many boxes of leftover calendars that they still had in their warehouse.
@lilworth Brenda is a decent actress. Not the best, but also not the worst. Anyone is better than ABB or Motor Mouth Grace Chan. Brenda was engaged to Miley Cyrus's brother, yes, so what. Robert DeNiro also dates outside his race. That does not mean he hates his race. It is just like a friend of mine. He is so skinny but loves his women with some serious meat on their bones. It is who someone is romantically attracted to. There is a very pretty idol boy and his "girlfriend", or beard of a few years , is so fricking ugly that she is fugly, or ugly for a living. Maybe he is attracted to ugly women. It all adds up to preference, or whatever turns a person on.
@happybi Hi yourself. Hope you and the family are doing well.
Loving this series so far. I thought that at 50 eps this would be draggy but it is fast-paced and thoroughly enjoyable for the witty dialogue, guest stars, parodies and good chemistry from all the leads. Love the trio of Moses, Bobby and Louis as they hatch their plot to bring about the downfall of the Sheungs. I'm also beginning to see Ali in a different light, she's entirely believable and likeable as the ditzy rich girl though I've never liked her or thought much of her acting before. Moses is also doing a good job and i love it when he cusses in English, i actually think he's sexy when he does lol! Bobby needless to say was funny and a joy to watch but it's Louis who really rocks especially in the first few eps when he was still in the old man's body, his mannerisms really made me lol. Kristal however was annoying acting lost. This drama really keeps me entertained every night.
Looks like im the only one enjoying it haha. Yes their roles are similar but there are differences. If nothing is similar then its not the same franchise. This franchise is about family drama, about the battle for inheritances etc. So of course some things are going to be recycled. I think this series for me is more of a treat. Something Nostalgic. <3 Looking forward to DPS too!
Actually i don't get the logic why TVB wants to put the same cast in the same drama (but with different settings) telling essentially the same story (lots of bickering and back stabbing over money and noisy family politics, biatchy women fighting for control) three times. Twice is already baffling enough. I'm tired just looking at their faces. Will probably check out the first few eps if time permits, just to see how bad it is.
@llwy12 oh okay thanks no wonder I don’t really know who he is since I don’t really watching movies I usually watched tvb dramas the most if I have free time.
@coralie ironically what you mentioned about Vincent's crying scenes is exactly the reason why i thought he overacted in those crying scenes lol! It made me cringe to watch him, luckily he wasnt trashing his legs around or he would look like a spoilt kid throwing a temper tantrum. Crying as if your heart is going to break doesn't mean clutching at your heart as if having a heart attack, shaking your body violently, thumping your hands on the floor and rolling on the ground as what Vincent did. Such a drama king! I quite enjoyed his acting in earlier eps but he spoilt it for me with his over-acting as the drama progressed. I really have to disagree that Ruco cant do crying scenes as well as Vincent. Did you watch ROE? If you did, can you recall the scene where Jessica died? You can see his crying scene there is heartbreaking without being OTT. In Destination Nowhere when kevin cheng came across the accident scene where his brother and sis-in-law died he was devastated but again no need to clutch heart and roll on the ground but you feel his heartbreak. As for Kenneth that heartbreaking ep with his parents brought tears to a lot of people's eyes. Again no need for OTT theatrics.
@coralie I kinda disagree. Kenneth may be a much lesser actor, but I appreciate the fact that he did not go nuclear in those sad scenes. Ma Kwai is a character that has been through many personal tragedies, those he remembered, those he had forgotten but subsconsiously do recognise and has had a hard life. I don't see him breaking down completely because the theme of his character is he is innately a good person with a good heart and a strong resolution. Nothing could bring him down and it is that positivity that makes Ma Kwai such a unique character. But when he did cry, he did so quietly because those scenes didn't belong to Ma Kwai but to the souls he had to drive to their destination. I love the scene where Moon was talking about her hopes and dreams and there was Kenneth, quietly crying huge huge tears but never taking away Moon's moment, but sharing it. Sometimes we don't need screaming or loud crying. He did scream sometimes. I do find Kenneth's performance very elegant for a character that's supposed to be not elegant. I love Exorcist's metre. For all its fault, this is TVB's best drama in 2017 for me quite simply because it moved me and it did tell the story very well (except for the insane ending). The same feeling I feel about Hubert's performance. Stony faced yes, but the way he delivered his lines, his consistency makes me believe Hubert will be a great actor as he is a great singer with the right nurture.
@llwy12 THAT was funny! I laughed a lot during that scene. For all its faults, My Ages Apart have some genuine comedic moments.
@llwy12 I’m afraid that all the old veterans seem to have aged a lot. Could tell that Louise Lee has to use a lot of effort to be upbeat with her lines due to her poor health. This will be the last time the cast will act together. Still very watchable compared to the series we get nowadays but not as natural acting as the earlier instalments.
@passingby so glad im not the only one. Zoie Tam??? What???? I didnt even remember who she was!
@akinu Thanks! Yay!!! I'm not the only feeling that way about Kris Wu. I also feel the same way with Huang Zitao. I do like Lu Han. He looks sweet and friendly.
@jimmyszeto My guess is that everyone accepted the invite to film the series because of the producer. Back when Lau Ka Ho and Mui Siu Ching returned to TVB and announced that they would be doing HOG 3 and BTROC 2, everyone clamored to get themselves into the series thinking this was a tried and true formula that for sure audiences would love. I remember the welcoming back party that they had where all the artists were like if LKH tells me to participate, I’ll do it, no questions asked. Personally, I feel it’s dumb for artists to blindly accept filming offers based solely off of ties to the producer, but unfortunately, that’s alot of times how things work in HK. Also agree that TVB is being lazy again here and going with same old same old rather than actually putting thought and effort into what they are doing for once…
enjoying this show so far. hopefully get better as it goes on.
i havent start watching and will give it a miss
Isn’t it 50 episodes? Hope it’s not gonna be draggy.
@dramas4me i always felt that about him as well. personally, i think Exo in general are overhyped and overpaid.
@funnlim agreed. this drama is actually surprisingly funny. the punny jokes and quick (intelligent) comebacks were a breath of fresh air. I even had several LOL moments which is rare for me. but I'm only on episode 7. everyone did their parts well.
Lee Kwok Lun’s English is horrendous....
@coralie Can’t wait till Joel Chan gets a chance to star in a series on his own. It is inevitable! He has the acting range and certainly will surprise us acting as a good guy.
Still watchable but seriously...why give Michelle Yim an identical character to previous instalment and why did she take it? Unreal lazy writing and casting. Also what a waste of Vincent. Seems like they cast Vincent into something brilliant then next up cast him as a useless support...on and on. Not the best method to create superstars...
@funnlim This article is from on.cc so I’m not surprised – I’ve never liked the way they write their articles. The mainstream media in general rarely does a good job covering details in series…they basically cover surface level stuff, the “heavy hitting” topics that (they think) will attract the most eyeballs (usually related to sex and relationships and gossip). In comparisons, HK01 actually did a few really good articles on the series – I read one today recapping that scene where Louis Cheung takes his cable box to the cable company attempting to cancel his contract and has to go through hell and back (and still can’t cancel his contract, lol)…the scene is actually an extremely funny (and clever) parody of a real-life event that happened at i-Cable…I’m sure quite a few HK cable subscribers chuckled when they saw that scene.
@passingby have you ever seen Kenneth Ma break down over love scenes? Or any really devastating scenes where he shakes and collapses and his heart hurt so bad you think he's having a heart attack? Even in TEM, he was crying with restraint and shouting, but not utterly, utterly devastated and completely broken like Vincent Wong was. Kenneth Ma doesn't have the kind of skills to act to the degree Vincent Wong did. Kenneth is a hold-back kind of actor which has its positives, while Vincent is a no-holds barr one. It's a different type of actor, which is why I say KM cannot do the same role that VW did. Roger Kwok has done many breakdown scenes before. I really don't know if Joel Chan can do that. KC definitely cannot do that. Ruco might be able to, if he had the energy & time to nurture the character.
I hope I'm wrong, but I always feel that Kris Wu looks arrogant in most of his pictures.
@funnlim Yup...and what would be worse is for TUA to sweep all the awards and be the biggest winner of the night (unlikely but not impossible, since at the end of the day, it’s up to TVB who they want to give the awards to). All I know is that if TUA sweeps the awards, it’s almost guaranteed that we will be seeing part 3 with the same cast some time in the not so distant future....
@funnlim Exactly! The whole premise of the series just sounds silly. Besides, I hate it when TVB messes with classic series (in this case, the Ti Lung version of Justice Pao from 20+ years ago) and rolls out a hugely mediocre reboot. Definite skip!
Tbh third instalment are hit or miss. Many movies tend to fall for that. Look at terminator 3: rise of machines despite 2 strong films. Also, I am kind of glad people realize how tiring and, to an extent, absurd the usual plot the truly is. Again I speak as someone who thought the first two were overrated. My 2 cents. And I agree with changing the formula. Have a darker instalment too. I thought the first two felt a bit too much of sunshine and rainbows. I mean the villains were forgiven quite a bit in the end from my memory.
@elizabeth I haven't seen enough of Vincent topless. Rather him than another guy. Please shower scene!!
To be honest, he has a young healthy man's body. But 40 inch chest is a bit ott, like he's 6 feet tall sort of claim. No doubt nice body but not well defined and no absssssss. But better than Bosco.
There it is. Possibly 2017's worst series will win best series at TVB awards. Jessica basically won an award for playing Jessica.
What happened to artistes actually posing for the calendars? like some concept art instead of chucking in the posters and call it a calendar?
@llwy12 By that age Justice Pao probably already married. No love story. He's into justice and all. not gonna watch.
Not only recycled, I just wish for once Louise Lee plays a villain. She's always the wise matriach. Always, Poor Susanna, always the trouble maker. And I can't believe they handed the CEO position to a shoe polisher who doesn't know how to run a small business more so such a big business. The story is just dumb. I much prefer My ages apart's version of Heart & Greed where Ali got slapped many times in one scene? that 1000 episodes series? Now THAT is funny!
Of all the suggestive scenes, witty dialogues, funny social commentary, puns on TVB themselves, all this article can concentrate are on the mundane stuff that nobody even care? My Ages Apart is stupidly intelligent. It is meant to be funny and insane and stupid but deep down it is a very well written dialogue and pretty smart. everybody doing a great job. Anyone cares the size of breasts or chests?
@msxie0714 that's not a 40 inch chest. Michael Tong would have a 40 inch.
@llwy12 Thanks a lot for the info. If that's the case, then this series is not that appealing anymore (at least to me) since the focus is on the romantic storyline, which sounds boring to me. @cutie777 I also have not heard of Shaun Tam until when i read news about him co-starring with Ruco in Succession War. Justice Pao is his second TVB series...i think TVB may want to promote him as one of their leading actors.
@bubbletea hey you! Hope all is well!
Cutie with a nice body. His face looks like Jimmy Lam.
did anyone ever say high budget = high rating? nothing's guaranteed in life so for whomever to think that, it's pretty naive.
@cutie777 No, Shaun Tam isn’t a Mainland actor. He is an HK movie actor and actually has about 17 or 18 years of experience in the industry. This is his first time filming for TVB but he’s definitely not a newbie actor – he has filmed countless movies and TV series (Taiwanese series and also in HK, series for RTHK) over the years. With that said though, it’s not surprising that you may not have heard of him, as most of his previous roles, whether in movies or TV series, weren’t major (a few lead roles but mostly supporting). Shaun is actually more “famous” for being veteran actor Ti Lung’s son (he doesn’t flaunt it himself but the media loves to bring it up). I think those of you who plan on watching this series will need to push aside all previous “understanding” of Justice Pao because this series is obviously not going to be in the same vein. It’s a comedy first of all, so that’s already a huge difference, but also this is about Pao in his youth (hence the explanation for the younger actors). If we’re talking about Justice Pao as we’re used to seeing him depicted, then yea, actors like Bobby or Evergreen would be a better fit, but obviously that’s not the objective here with this series. Oh and don’t expect historical accuracy because this is TVB after all – they aren’t exactly known for being “accurate” with their historical series.
@diana80 okay thanks. I know right? It would make more sense if they put Bobby in and I didn’t think of that until you said something about it. I also never heard Of Shaun Tam either is he one of the mainland actors? And he definitely doesn’t fit for the Justice Pao drama first of all he’s too young and skinny suppose find a guy like Bobby, Wayne or even Evergreen Mak. If that’s the case for finding Shaun to pair up with Nancy like you never seen they put young one pair up with an older guy? I don’t know what tvb are thinking sometimes.
Yay! GEM is the first HK female who has the highest earnings! ^^ (according to this list)
Many of the big productions were co-produced with china and they were released online before it even aired in HK and has super high views online. So alot of people just watched it online before the broadcast date which is probably why it got low ratings. Plus ratings don't have the same standards anymore. TVB should focus more on online platforms. Sites like Netflix is taking over and everyone is just watching things online anytime they want rather than having try to catch shows at a specific time on TV.
@tiffany Yup...and the other thing to consider too is that with TVB's recent trend of collaborating with Mainland China platforms such as Tencent, Youku, iQiyi, etc. in broadcasting their dramas, they basically shot their chances at getting decent ratings in HK, since they are obligated to allow Mainland audiences to watch the series first. Part of the reason why Line Walker's ratings in HK were so low was because they put 10 episodes up at a time for Mainland audiences (versus 1 episode a day for HK audiences), so HK audiences who didn't want to wait could just watch the Mainland version online and not bother with the HK version (whether on TV or online). Basically, this will be the modus operandi going forward for any and all TVB co-productions with Mainland China. I'm not sure if the above numbers are the cross-platform ratings (which counts both TV and online) or just the TV ones. If it's cross-platform, then yea, the ratings are truly pathetic if the highest they can get with all platforms combined is 28 points...
@diana80 Because the focus in this version of Justice Pao is on the romantic relationships rather than the cases. Shaun Tam plays Pao in his youth and will have a romantic storyline with Nancy, who in turn will be romantically linked to Raymond Cho's Gongsun Ce (a role originally slated for Power Chan). Oh and no doubt there is a "gimmick" factor at play here with Shaun Tam being the son of Ti Lung, who famously played Justice Pao in the previous TVB version from the 90s (already this little fact is being used in the promotion of the series by TVB). Though to your point, supposedly this version of Justice Pao will be a comedy rather than the traditional serious drama of past versions, so yea, why not cast someone like Bobby who is guaranteed to make audiences laugh? Better that than some silly parody of Justice Pao by the younger generation....
They've been the subject of heavy criticism in China lately as being unreasonably overpaid and heavily lacking in acting skills.
@coralie LM started off well but began to unravel especially the last few eps with a lot of ridiculous plot twists which really beggar belief. The other goat i have is how they made Hopeman too all-knowing and too super-hero like with his super keen sense of hearing (again beggaring belief). He's too unreal. I also didn't like how Toby Chan was cast as the transvestite. It would be better to cast a real actor (male) in the role which would make the case more convincing. As for who can play Hopeman besides Vincent, I think any of these actors can - Ruco Chan, Roger Kwok (the character can be written to be a little older to suit Roger), Kevin Cheng, Joel Chan and i dont see why Kenneth Ma cant.
Exorcists Meter is so popular and so many people have good things to say. But i didnt find it as great
@tiffany Agree. Ratings dont have that value as it did before. Its all about what people are saying and creating the hype online.
@cutie777 Yes, Tavia left TVB already and she only come back to film Another Era...so yea can't wait to watch her on screen again after quite some time. Btw, why is it not Bobby Au Yeung as Justice Pao? It will be more interesting if Bobby is casted for the role because i believe he will be more convincing and entertaining as Justice Pao.
Almost all of them are flower boys lol. Wonder how they'll look when they are 40-50 years old.
Well, a handful of ppl watch dramas online now. It should be, “high ratings don’t equate to quality dramas.”
Nice poster can’t wait to watch some of this upcoming dramas. It’s good to see Tavia back in screen again she looks good from the poster but I thought she quit tvb if I’m right.
@bubbletea I know right? I’m glad you’re agree with me too.
@lilworth I’m not too sure about her dating life but you could be right. I know her by watching Disney movies or shows.
Reeeeaaaal smooth, Kenneth. If a guy said that to me, I think I would be super insecure lol. There's truth to what he said, but as a woman, I don't think I'd be happy hearing that. So much for sincerity.
@passingby @funnlim, yea ok, I might be splitting hairs. overall I do admit TEM is a more consistent drama than LM. at the very least, the parts leading up to the ending wasn't a big catastrophe that LM was. however, with that said, I still vote Vincent Wong as Best Actor! I tried to imagine Kenneth Ma doing any of those crazy break down scenes that Vincent Wong did in LM and I just couldn't.
@cutie777 Do you mean the Asian American girl who only dates white guys??
they do have their draw. for many younger girls, they are very attractive given their looks and dance skills.
@bubbletea Well, at least she did not say villain roles can be some one like Eddie Murphy. That will really go over well. LOL!
Like many people here I think she is not a great actress. She is very pretty. Hopefully she will do a good job in this role. I really like to know who are the other well known Chinese actresses also auditioned for this role. For the male role I hope Shawn Dou or Mark Zhao will be the one if they will audition/auditioned for it. Here is an article about her role: https://www.forbes.com/sites/robcain/2017/11/29/disneys-choice-for-mulan-lead-role-leaves-some-chinese-moviegoers-baffled/#434d5ebb2f92
@llwy12 or China investment factor? They need a China actress?
Taelizabeth Disney production. Tang wei looks too mature. Crystal looks young for her age. Maybe Emma Watson won't be the worse Disney live action princess. I hope not.
Hmmm. I actually prefer Tang Wei.
I think the new policy is quite good. I have been quite annoyed when rape scenes and pool scene have been just written in just for the sake of it (e.g. Bet Hur). I had no problem with a sexy scene that is a part of the plot. Vicky Chan has been cast as sexy vixens for both "Dinner at 8" and "My Ages Apart" and I have no problem with her wearing skimpy stuff as it is part of the story. It is more funny than seductive. No problems with Hubert being near naked in "TEM" as it makes sense. However, I do have a bit problem with TVB making Vincent Wong have a topless scene or a scene in his undies for nearly every series. He does have a great body but is it necessary for every series? And the "sexy" talk in "The Unholy Alliance" with all the sexual innuendos fpr every single episode is unnecessary. TVB should tone that down as well. Sometimes it is the media who over exaggerates on such scenes rather than TVB. I do not like to see small clips of East Magazine and other tabloids on youtube to highlight and exaggerate an actress' body shape or a rape scene. Examples are Samatha Ko's rape scene in "Friendly Fire" which lasted for 1 min, Kate Tsui's rape scene in "Highs & Lows", Moon Lau's shirt being ripped open in "Four Walls", Sharon Chan's legs in "Ghetto Justice", etc.
Actually I prefer Disney cast new Chinese descent actress based on their skill. But of course, Disney need star power. I will give LYF the benefit of doubt.
@msxie0714 @bubbletea Brenda Song is actually half Hmong/Miao and half Thai. I also think her darker complexion is more fitting for Mulan compared to LYF.
@bubbletea On the other side of the coin, there’s also LYF’s reputation for being “box office poison” since all of her past movies tanked. So looks like this could go one of two ways: either Disney helps raise her out of “box office poison” status and propels her to super stardom or she drags the movie down with her. My guess is that it will be the former, since this is Disney after all, so there will be a guaranteed audience to some extent... Btw, regarding the discussion about whether the actress bears a resemblance to Mulan — supposedly one of the other actresses who “auditioned” for the role (one of the 1000 candidates) was British-Taiwanese actress Judy Hu Ting Ting whom people say actually looks like Mulan (I’m assuming they mean the original Disney animated version of Mulan)...she also has experience filming in Hollywood (she was in one of the Bridget Jones movies and a bunch of other smaller films), but Disney picked LYF over her, I’m assuming because of the star quality piece (since all her roles were minor in the films she was in). Maybe Disney isn’t really looking for someone who can act...either that or they aren’t aware of the fact that LYF isn’t a good actress. Like the rest of Hollywood, Disney most likely doesn’t have much in depth knowledge of the Chinese entertainment industry...
@bubbletea Isn't she 100% Korean?
Indirectly thanks to the fame gained during their kpop days and now they are enjoying the fruits back in their homeland. Definitely their price for appearance is worth more than Jay Chou since he is now a bit off season being married and a father of 2. With such earnings in such young age, won't be surprise their income is more than Jay Chou and even kpop king G Dragon.
@funnlim "Its only problem is 5 Min last cliff hanger anti climatic fight."... ikr! It's akin to just as you exit the highway and are only minutes away from your destination, you get pulled over for speeding! What a bummer! I was like.......huh........that's it??? @coralie " isn’t it strange how ghosts can “sit down” when they can’t touch anything else".........this doesn't make the drama dumb becos it doesn't take anything away from the plot. You're just splitting hairs. TEM isn't faultless but at least the plot holes aren't as huge as LM.
@funnlim Your last sentence in the above comment comes across as not so nice, IMHP. There are villian roles for chinese actors too, just saying.
@happybi Hi happybi, Yup, agree with you. This would not go down well with the chinese community. I will see what the film has to offer as a live production.
@cutie777 I can see your point. Brenda also has the required skills and looks to play the part.
@llwy12 I am not too impressed with LYF's acting skills, but who knows, she might pleasantly surprise us with this live adaptation of Mulan. Based on the required criteria for the film, her ability to speak english and her martial arts skills are spot on. Her acting skills, however, does leave a lot to be desired. It is great to see a chinese born chinese actress getting the coveted role in a Hollywood made film. It is a step up the ladder for chinese artists. i too agree that Brenda Song would have made a good Mulan. She was born in the States, but is of chinese heritage, she speaks english and has a black belt in taekwondo, not to mention, she has the dark skin that is in sync with the original Mulan character from the Disney adaptation of the film.
@happybi I’m glad you’re agree with me but other doesn’t oh well.
didnt like both these series. So boring! The plot and cases in LM was so bad. And too much romance, cheesy scenes in TEM.
Ok, so based on what I read (in an article from SCMP), LYF was chosen as “the one” amongst a pool of 1000 candidates (which included a few other familiar faces in the Chinese acting world) because she met the 3 criteria they were looking for: ability to speak English, martial arts skills, and “star quality” (last one is obviously very subjective). I haven’t watched any of LYF’s works so can’t comment on her acting, but one thing I do agree with is that casting a Chinese actress is a step in the right direction given all the whitewashing in Hollywood, especially in recent years. The director for the film, Niki Caro, has been quoted as saying that she “stresses the importance of maintaining cultural authenticity” in retelling the story of Mulan — we will see how true that is once the rest of the cast is announced.
@funnlim Allright, then the sequel should be titled Uber Exorcists, chasing out evil spirits in a blink of an eye.
News Flash! To this date, no historical evidence has been found to confirm the real Mulan ever existed. The whole "legend" was based on a verse of an ancient poem that literally just said Hua Mulan enlisted in place of her father. That was all folks! Even King Arthur and Merlin had more literary references yet both have been deemed to be only legendary figures. In the context, it is silly to debate about who looks more like the real Mulan.
@aiya rate follows the taxi rate.
@coralie because sitting is not willfully touching. So that's ok. Monday know Kenneth because he is a taxi driver and she uses his service. That's not dumb, that's a plot device. Its only problem is 5 Min last cliff hanger anti climatic fight. The title is ok as well. If anyone ca n criticise this series, then the other series must be criticized too.
@happybi I googled her. I don't think so. Maybe crystal poker face will be an advantage as mulan. And am sure it has tondo with china investing as well.
@anoninhk If that were the case, it certainly would set off a firestorm of complaint against Disney about white supremacist practices.
@cutie777 I actually think Brenda is a better choice too. Crystal is just bland. But yes.. she is not Chinese so won't go well with the Chinese community. Overall, I think they should have found someone younger.
@hannah It all depends on who is calling the shot to make these scenes "necessary". If it were up to me, all these scenes are necessary.
LYF always look like she has a mask on. That #pokerface. One word to describe her is bland. It's not like she doesn't mix with her shows, but she doesn't add to it. Hollywood has done a terrible job with casting, as always. Why can't they ask the opinion of those with Chinese ancestry who actually pays attention to Chinese media and can critique Asian actresses? Hollywood has bombed the last few adaptations with Asian influences by whitewashing the movies. This time, they've improved. However, the final girl they landed on is LYF. Just...why! There are hundreds of Chinese actresses in Hollywood trying to break in. Give them a break.
The title alone should earn this drama a spot on TVB's all time worst English titled shows. "Exorcist's Meter"? What is their hourly rate? LOL!
@passingby Good analogy...& i agreed that if TVB had scheduled a 2hr finale on Friday night, the ratings would be higher. As i noticed in other forums, some didn't even know earlier that the final episode will be aired on Sunday evening, and thought it will air on Monday. Therefore, like @funnlim, me too would like to say that lower ratings doesn't mean the series is not good. Speaking of silly moments/dumb scenes, both TEM and LM have their own share of those scenes. But due to TEM being a horror cum comedy series, so i'm fine with those silly scenes in it which i treat as comedy elements of the series.
@funnlim Trust me on those two drama.. I think you will enjoy it.. As a Mom, you can relate to "go back couple." I know I did. It was very heart warming... the story of her with her Mom was love.... I cried in a few scene.. As for "Because it's my first life." it's very relatable too.. and the cast was awesome!
i thoroughly enjoyed the drama. it was quite a surprise with the small cast and i didn't really like the female leads very much. i was just putting it on the background to make some noise initially. but after a few episodes, i was hooked. the story was touching and although it's supernatural, one could feel the characters. legal maverick was promising given the amount of promotion but it was a huge disappointment.... the story was not cohesive give it is an investigative drama....
@funnlim It’s TVB working her ragged. There was another interview where she said that she had filmed several series back to back, totaling 70 episodes (or something like that...don’t remember exact number), with little rest. Also, TVB’s notorious 16 to 20 hour work days, oftentimes with little to no sleep for an extended amount of time — that type of schedule done over and over again is enough to make anyone look tired and haggard. Anyway, good on Eliza to take time out to rest and re-energize — it’s absolutely necessary in an environment like that.
The exorcist meter has a lot of dumb and inexplicable moments too. But I overlook it due to suspense of disbelief. If you don't believe me, isn't it strange how ghosts can "sit down" when they can't touch anything else? Or how about it's so coincidental that Kenneth is somehow connected to the corrupt cop through Mandy who just so coincidentally knows Kenneth? A lot of moments in TEM are inconsistent/lazy examples. If you were to discuss silliness, both have their own share.
Am pretty sure the real Mulan isn't delicate looking or even pretty. So if follow real life there's no movie to be made. Liu Yifei is sort of a good choice except seriously she's a mediocre actress. Who knows? Maybe this will be her ultimate acting breakout role. For me she could have stood there and do nothing and she would be perfect, like how she did in Condor Heroes.
Will be Mushu be in here? Could be voiced by non Asian actor.
@anoninhk doubt it. They will cast an Asian, except in Hollywood's lexicon of Asian, that would be anyone with yellow skin instead of Chinese. When it should be Chinese. Nope, you will see perhaps at worse mixed but looks Asian. Now for the villain, that can be someone caucasion.
What happened to Eliza? I know she looks good for her age but since losing so much weight she looks haggard.
@passingby Good analogy! But I gotta add I thought the special effects as in Shek Kam Dong's arrow and double sword thing very cool. I thought it was a huge missed opportunity that his diamond was not carved into a diamond sword or something. I man such a big diamond carved into 1 tiny bullet? Nope! Should have been an awesome glowing white sword that blings. The gun part in the last scene was silly.
LYF is gorgeous but so incredibly dull. Don't know if it's just her roles or what. Hope it doesn't bomb. I expect that will cast a white actor to be her love interest as I can't imagine Disney going with an all-Asian cast.
@cutie777 no one knows what the real Mulan looked like. If you're referring to the cartoon Mulan, that's just a version imagined by Disney. Anyways, Liu Yifei is a better choice than Brenda Song.
With names like Epaphras and Anjaylia ... they're well-matched. It will be interesting to see what namely-names they come up with for their poor kid/s.
@passingby Good analogy lol
@funnlim yeah agree about LM. So many dumb moments especially in the case involving Yanice's death. Eg how they found the second bullet in the open field which was like looking for a needle in the haystack, yet they conveniently found it, thanks to Hopeman's superhero-like keen sense of hearing. Really lmao. Then when he was shot by Mr Dai he could actually hear the bullet and shifted his body so it wouldn't fatally wound him. Just plain ridiculous! And the broadcast of Mr Dai burying him and Dino was just too hilarious.
TEM is like a car ride which started off with some road bumps (silly special effects which looked at least 10 years outdated) but once you hit the highway you can feel the breeze in your hair and coast along the road, making for an enjoyable ride. The first couple of episodes were fun to watch but got a little silly for the next couple or so episodes. But hang in there, ride it out and you'll really enjoy this drama. If TVB had scheduled a 2 hr finale episode to end on Friday night, I'm quite sure it would have achieved better ratings than 24.3.
Wow. A very good opportunity for LYF, but she's not a good actresss lol
@happybi I don't know. I find kdrama rather detached although its not supposed to be that way. They amp up Ramp up shock value and not too good at quiet moments.
@llwy12 that's how it works. Tvb owns the rights so no need to credit him. Let him write the sequel!!
The synopsis is wrong. And lower rating is explained. Doesn't takeaway the fact that it is best drama of 2017. Legal mavericks is just insanely dumb.
Great unexpected news but frankly she's a mediocre actress. But I like her. Better than angelababy. At least Chinese actress in Hollywood pool is wider now.
@karina I know she’s not Chinese but I prefer her better it’s just my opinion. Even though she’s not Chinese at least she look more like Mulan than Crystal.
I'm glad they didn't choose a hapa or some other Asian ethnicity passing off as Chinese. LYF is also good at English so this is perfect choice tbh
@cutie777 what? Brenda Song isn't even Chinese. She's also basically a nobody besides the fact she was once a B-list Disney star
Off the topic a bit. Is there anyone that watching heart and greed 3?? Actually i was yawning while watching it. Puff.... big flop..
I think they should find Brenda Song to be Mulan because she’s a Disney actress and she looked more like Mulan a lot.
@llwy12 typical TVB lol
If sexy scenes are necessary for the show i dont see why not.
so glad is asian actress got the role. I am looking forward to the movie.
If the scene call for it, it's not an issue.. but if it's a force sex scene when it's not necessary, it is just plain awkward.
If you guys want to watch something relatable and heart warming.. you guys need to watch "Because this is my first life" and "Go back couple." Excellent KDrama with lots of heart and an excellent script/cast!
@jimmyszeto Yup, so true! A lot of audiences want to watch stuff they can relate to, connect with, series that are more grounded in real life rather than having to suspend disbelief all the time. TVB used to be really good at this, like back in the 70s and early 80s when they did a lot of series about “grassroots” characters with realistic storylines that the average joe could relate to due to its connection to a societal concern such as education, housing, family life, etc. Unfortunately, as TVB got bigger, they also got lazier (and greedier), churning out scripts that were more commercialized and largely for show, with lots of theatrics, action, gimmicks and whatnot but very little substance.
@hannah You’re welcome! The guy who “won” the contest is actually a TVB employee, but he works in a completely unrelated department (I think he’s in the marketing department or something like that). He did get 10,000 HKD prize money and TVB did fulfill their promise of turning the script into a series, but looks like he didn’t get any scriptwriting credit for it, which leads me to believe that TVB changed enough of whatever he submitted originally that it didn’t warrant further recognition in terms of “credit”. Either way though, at least he got some prize money out of it (probably more than he’d ever make working for cheapo TVB, lol), so it wasn’t all in vain.
@funnlim Yea, agreed. Heart and Greed may only have aired 4 episodes, but already it’s not doing too well in terms of audience acceptance. The biggest complaints I’ve seen so far is that this third installment is essentially a copy of the first two installments (so no motivation to watch, especially if you’ve already seen the first two) and also that everything looks forced and gimmicky. They’ve got all the older folks (Ha Yu, Louise Lee, Susanna Kwan, etc.) saying all these supposedly “golden quotes”, but problem is, it’s stuff that younger people usually say, so it’s weird coming from the mouths of old-timers. I sure hope Lau Ka Ho and Mui Siu Ching aren’t going down Wong Jing’s path where all they do is rehash old material and up the “gimmick” factor to attract eyeballs. If this kind of “Mainland collaboration” series is the future of TVB, then thanks but no thanks – they can move their headquarters to Mainland and cater to Mainland audiences tastes instead of continuing to torture HK audiences. In terms of the above article – it will be interesting to see how these rules will be applied to, say, Deep in the Realm of Conscience – which from the getgo has been “advertising” its sexy scenes as major selling points for the series….unless these rules aren’t retroactive, in which case all series already filmed when these rules went into effect are safe but all future series / programs will be impacted. Personally, I don’t mind the sexy scenes as long as it is necessary to the plot/storyline/historical background (e.g.costumes in ancient series)...otherwise it makes sense not to allow these scenes in productions, especially if they are gratuitous and serve no relevant purpose.
The My Ages Apart scene was sexy ish, daring but also funny because Moses' character finds her more annoying than sexy and she was desperate. I have more issue with Heart And Greed 3 and Bosco and the 1st episode or 2nd, can't remember which where there was quite an extensive kissing/naked/bed scene which was unsuitable for prime time tv and especially for a family drama. My Ages Apart is not a family drama, but Heart And Greed is and moreover, it is very annoying the guy with the best body in that show is not showing but ended up is that one who is so skinny it hurts to see. I bet later there will be more such scene courtesy of Bosco and remember, this IS a family drama. Which is why Exorcist's metre brief scene of forced sex turn willing sex etc etc was more appropriate for the scene it was in. And someone should issue warning to TVB to not waste people's time with unnecessary scene like 15 min or so of Bosco and Vincent driving around on dirt road or whatever. 15 min. Wasted my 15 min. and the usual atypical WRONG depiction of Malaysians. I seriously find Heart and Greed more offensive than my ages apart which was witty, at least. Heart And Greed stopped being funny when they kept quoting lyrics.
@jimmyszeto The fact that he's half Malaysian also adds to his popularity.
@diana80 yes agree that could be the case.
We haven’t had this in the Best Actor category for a while. Whoever loses, Vincent or Kenneth we will be gutted for them and they will be feeling hard done by as these opportunities don’t come along very often. Same with best support, Joel or Owen...
@diana80 It gave him a massive popularity surge in Malaysia. He is still the most popular TVB actor in Malaysia by far. Listen to to reactions when his name is mentioned.
Congratulations to the couple. They look so sweet together, very suitable couple. However, Epaphras doesn't seem to look fully Chinese, I wonder if he is mixed? Anjaylia is not fully Chinese either if I'm not mistaken. I've read she's a mixed with Indian or some other Asian ethnicity. I like how they kept the wedding simple despite Epaphras wealthy background.
@passingby I know about the 70:30 ratio. What i meant in my earlier post is that Malaysian voters do not just vote for the most popular actors/actress, but they at least take into consideration the performance of the actors/actress to make sure they worth the awards. Therefore as you can see, both the Best Actor & Actress, and Best Supporting Actor & Actress for Starhub 2017 could not repeat their victory in Malaysia because their performance in their nominated series were indeed not the best, particularly for Ali Lee and Jacqueline Wong. Anyway, i do agree with you that the final result is still "moderated" by TVB. @jimmyszeto If it is really as what you claimed, Outbound Love should have won Best Drama in Malaysia that year (2014). Best Actor should have been Ruco (but he lost it to Roger that year in Malaysia). The series did not win any major awards in Malaysia that year despite being filmed in Malaysia.
@lyu310 ic. Thanks. I only recognize her by watching tvb.
@llwy12 oh thanks for the info, no wonder why this show is so original! i hope TVB do more script contest in future.
@mike @axe71 meant Michael had to wait 40 years for his first award
@cutie777 Looks like he's a theater actor named 梁子峰. Says they've been together since 2012. They registered their marriage August 2017. I actually have no idea who she is besides being Grace Chan's friend.
@llwy12 it’s amazing how when scripts are kept toned down and can relate to real life then they become very watchable. Although the theme is supernatural, it has a more sense of realism than the action series such as Highs and Lows, Burning Hands and the Unholy Alliance where the storylines and character spirals out of control. The characters are kept real. Not since Time before Time and Female Masculinity have we received such a pleasant surprise for a warm supernatural or ghost themed series that families can sit to watch together. Love the ‘small horse’ character. Wish he was my taxi driver to be honest.
I’m actually not surprised that this series did so well, since the original script came from a recruitment contest (the winner of the contest got their script made into a series) rather than written by TVB’s usual scriptwriters, which is why it’s not typical TVB fare. Of course, TVB’s scriptwriters had to modify the script somewhat to fit within the restrictions of broadcasting rules, but the original concept and “bones” of the script were kept intact. The producer admitted in an interview recently that they didn’t have high hopes for the series and were pleasantly surprised at how well the series was accepted by audiences. As for whether there will be a sequel or not, it’s hard to say since this series didn’t go the typical route....though I did hear that the script was originally a three-parter but they changed it a bit to make it work as a series, so depending on how they changed it and what they took out, it could possibly be enough for a sequel (or spinoff perhaps)...
@wm2017 Angela is her real English name, and "baby" is her nickname, so she just combined the two to make it her stage name.
The Exorcist’s Meter’s success is due to its simple storyline, its simple use of computer effects. Natural working class we can related to. The main importance is the great selection of Hubert. It the character was acted badly, the whole series would be ruined. The supporting cast excellent. Mum, bad guy, friends. Reminds me of the children horror books I used to read as a child. Simple but thrilling and can’t wait to chase the next chapter.
@passingby Quite simple. Put on a Malaysian shirt, win an award. Travel to Malaysia for a travel program, the program wins an award.
@diana80 nope, your info is wrong. Starhub is 70% public votes and 30% professional panel (whatever that means). I think Astro uses the same 70-30 ratio. Of cos the public votes for both Astro and Starhub can be easily manipulated by fans who create bogus a/cs. Whatever it is, the final results are actually "moderated" by TVB haha (as we all already know).
In my opinion, between Singapore and Malaysia TVB awards, the Malaysia awards have more credibility because i noticed that fans in Malaysia do not merely vote based on popularity. Additionally, they also look into the performance of the actors to make sure they are voting for popular actors with best performance. Perhaps popularity does carry a larger percentage (eg. 60%), while performance carries smaller percentage (eg. 40%), but at least the actors were voted based on both criterias, rather than Singapore awards which clearly is a popularity award. Therefore, Ruco could easily won thrice in a row in Singapore due to his high popularity there. Besides, the results of TVB Starhub Singapore Awards normally have huge difference from the awads in Hong Kong due to the fact that the Singapore Awards are totally based on popularity. But to be the real TV King and Queen, actors need to be both popular while delivering great performance. Anyway, congratulations to both Jesicca and Michael Miu. So happy for them and they truly deserve the awards for their long commitment and well-experienced in the industry.
The Malaysian awards is only important to ones looking to increase popularity. It is just of a popularity contest voted by fans. Ruco won it 2 years in a row because he donned a Malaysian shirt in Outbound Love. It is a very biased awards and if don’t come then get nothing. All you have to do is film part of the series in Malaysia and they will love it. The award is important for Joel Chan though because he is looking for recognition and for a career boost. The female lead category is so weak. Hopefully they postpone the awards to February..
@axe71 Michael is wayyyy older than 40. More like 60. Men age very well in HK film industry.
@jaylee okay thanks. Do you have any idea who’s her boyfriend? I’m shocked that she’s getting pregnant this fast.
LOL..haha .... and we thought the name Angelababy was weird. Lord, wonder if their parents or they named themselves after :D
@cutie777 Winki Lai did go. I saw photos of her at the banquet. She's currently a few months pregnant so that's probably why she wasn't at the island.
This day so many people came up with a weird names and I haven’t heard of Anjaylia name before until now. I thought that girl winki Lai is her good friend too but she’s not in the picture unless she’s busy with something. Congratulations to the couple.
Really loved this series more than I thought I would. I liked the decision to develop the side characters more which seems to be lost art at TVB. Tone reminded me more of the late 90s semi serious supernatural films, making fun and respectful of subject matter at same time. Most supernatural stories either veer too hard one way or the other. I like the skepticism here.
Think Beh Beh's death left better resolution to the artificial love triangle. Since Kenneth obviously chose Mandy.
@funnlim i don't think i agree only because if you see decency in him as a villain, then he's not performing well. unless his character was written to have a humanizing aspect and wanted you to sympathize with his character, then that has to do with his role & the script and not with his acting.
Congrats to Anjaylia!
@oks18 it's a weird name lol, so i get theyenman's comment. but lots of names are weird. and i did learn something new - didn't know it's a greek/bible name.
Dude, the ending was a WTF slap to the audience. I mean if that's a prelude to another sequel, then okay. But from what Kenneth stated above, it doesn't seem like they ever planned to do this! Which means, if there is NO sequel, this is the only ending we get. I like this drama. It's not right to end it this way. How irresponsible!!!#@$@$(@ Kenneth's parents arc wasn't a huge surprise to me since I kinda seen this exact storyline happen in the Korean movie "Hello Ghost" so I did suspect something. Nevertheless, the impact didn't lessen for me. Buckets of tears, I tell you. Overall, I think this was a herculean team effort and everyone did their part tremendously well. I especially enjoyed Moon, Mandy and Susan's Tse's performances. There's something mesmerizing with the way Mandy & Susan speak their lines. Mandy was awesome as the demon. Someone mentioned above that she's too exaggerative, but I actually find her acting somewhat restrained. She didn't go crazy a la Tavia in BTROC. She was measured and domineering, although not powerful enough to be scared of. Susan was all kinds of batty mom in this show, but her acting was never overboard either. She's always the supreme professional in all her roles. I admire her so much. Lastly, Moon has always been great as the cutesy character. She excels at this! She's still very cute in this drama and probably the most undeserving of death. Which brings me to another point - I think her death was SO unnecessary. Fatty taxi driver died as consequence of Kenneth's inaction, which is necessary. Then, Mok Yau Wai died directly because of the demon, which concentrated Kenneth's hate. They've already constructed the perfect reasons for why Kenneth needs to kill the demon, but why did Beh Beh have to die?
Super happy for Jessica and Michael!!!! Congratulations!!
I think this is potentially best drama of 2017. I demand a sequel. The last 5 min had me scratching my head. Since this is to me a super hero origin story much like super villain as well sequel will be most suitable. New stories and all. Cried many times. Fantasy series but grounded. Yes kenneth is thin but today i saw bosco halfbnaked and he looks dry thin. By the way shocked at my ages apart mame pole dancer. Very daring. Still going strong.
@elizabeth Totally agree with you. TEM is definitely a much better and meaningful series than Blue Veins. TVB has made the right decision to include this series as its anniversary series this year. Hopefully this series could grab some awards during TVB Anniversary Awards 2017.
I love that Jessica is getting back into the game STRONG
Yeah!! Vey happy for Jessica Hsuan and Michael Miu!! They deserved it!! Eventhough I would prefer Jessica won it with her performance in Line Walker: The Prelude as Scarlett..which I think her performance in there was better. ps: but why does the award was so ugly....too bad for Michael..its his first big award..
@diana80 I think Kenneth did a fab job as the down to earth guy. I do think that he was quite convincing with his emotional scenes yet natural when it came to the comedic parts. As for Mandy, I think that her doctor role was too bland and flat to be interesting and the demon role too superficial. Both roles are different from each other, but the writing does not give much depth to these 2D characters. I found that Mandy tended to preach a lot in her doctor role and overact +++ (like what Tavia did in BTROC) for the demon role. Moon is getting better and better with each series. She does have a whiny voice but she carries herself well. I just like seeing Hubert. He is not a great actor nor is he very handsome but he is natural for a newbie and I love how he is very clear when he verbalises his lines. You can hear every word he is saying, especially when it comes to the ancient terms. I am also watching the other series when is guest starring as a crossdresser and he seems to be fun too. I don't mind seeing more of him on TV and his songs are fantastic to listen to. So far, the relationship between Hubert, Kenneth and Tse Suet Sam is what makes me want to keep watching. Not so interested in the love story. I did cry in the arc with Kenneth and his biological parents. I did not see that coming. TEM is better than "Blue Veins" IMO, I do hope TVB does explore the supernatural themes in the future.
@theyenman Epaphras is a name from the bible. It helps if you look up the Internet before you make any comments. Btw, Epaphras isn't an English name, it's a Greek name. We learn something new everyday, don't we? http://www.wordsoflife.co.uk/bible-studies/study-8-epaphras-an-example-to-follow/
I thoroughly enjoyed this show. I hope it will win Best Drama, Best Actor and Best Song in the TVB Anniversary Awards.
Looks like they're rewarding seniority this time but i think no one's complaining. The awards are spread over more dramas this time so there's less chances of accusations of favouritism. The most puzzling is Zoei Tam's win, she's such a boring actress.
“I just said I’ll treat everyone for dinner! But People would be more interested in seeing your two points,” Kenneth joked. “They wouldn’t care about mine.” haha............kenneth always has such a filthy mouth.
This show tells TVB that you don't need a big casts, big budget, traveling all the way to Taiwan, Macau, Mainland, Holland, etc. to film a good show. As long as more creativity are put into the writing of the story, and the production of the show is well-executed by all parties, then even a small budget series like TEM could also come out as a big hit. Kenneth definitely carried his role very well, but not Mandy. As was mentioned in my other post about Mandy's performance in this series, i truly believe she can do even better, but her performance in this series is just so so...not her best. Even Moon Lau outshines her in the show. I also like Hubert Wu and think he's the new gem in TVB. Hope to see more of him in future series and listen to more series theme songs sing by him.
wow! 40yrs for Michael ! well deserved victory !
Yahhh Congratz to both Jessica & Michael! vERY Well Deserved!
This series looks like the exact same formula for the first two installments. Someone eats a dead cat for something they didn't do and gets all the blame, while silently taking it. A lot of yelling ensues, and then the truth gets uncovered, dead cat eater is vindicated, and audience feels good. Rinse and repeat. Oh, and sprinkle in cheesy "family moments" where they have a stupid saying or a dumb little jingle between them, and boom! We have HOG3.
Kenneth Ma is so skinny. Guy probably looks like Slender Man without is shirt on lol.
The Exorcist’s Meter is def my top fav tvb show. The casts is weak but i do enjoy watching them and the story is good. I do hope the show win some awards.
Lol, is that his real English name? How the heck do you even pronounce that? and Why Epaphras? Why not name yourself Googlypoo? It's just as stupid ha ha.
So happy for Jessica and Michael! Very deserving!
@funnlim, i dont know but if there will come a sequel or not depends on the ratings and popularity of this drama. tvb usually dont make a sequel of a small budget drama like this. i also hope tvb will make a sequel with the same cast.
@funnlim I think the ending is not bad. It gives chance for a sequel. The only part which i'm not satisfied is it seemed easy to destroy the demon. I was expecting a longer and intense fight between Siu Ma and the demon. Anyway, with the good reception for this series, TVB most likely will produce the sequel. But i hope the production team will not change (same producer, director, scripwriters, etc) to ensure the quality of its sequel. I'm happy that Kenneth didn't end up with Mandy. In fact, if Moon's character was still alive, i would rather he choose Moon who was always there to support him. I feel strange because i have always like Mandy's acting, but i think both her acting and characters in this series is just so so. Her acting as a gentle doctor is boring, while as a demon, she wasn't so scary and she acted awkwardly too.
@kolo absolutely and just saw last episode. So great until last 5 min head scratching ending. I want a sequel. For once I demand a sequel. Seems like there might be a sequel. I see this series like a superhero origin story. Frustrating last 5 min. And yet 30 min earlier crying at some scenes. Maybe big boss fight a bit anti climax but I like what ma kwai did.
It has a promising cast, but a lot adaptions of the wuxia genre have come off as 'cheesy' and 'unoriginal'. The trailer looks visually stunning, but I'm worried about the execution.
Bosco has aged so well, he's like a fine wine.
@funnlim, i agree hubert fits the role as the monk he is very talented as well in singing as acting. this is the first time i see him acting but he already gives me a deep impression, i rarely see a talent with a total package like him at tvb nowadays. i just dont like his hairstyle but he actually looks very handsome. tvb should promote him to first lead.
My Ages apart started well but has turned into a n unrealistic cartoon style mess. The only positives are the charisma of Bobby, Louis and Krystal. Most of the other characters have been annoying. The Exorcist’s Meter however has been refreshing and the supportive cast has been very likable.
Ruco's dressing was okay to me. Guess it's beauty in the eyes of the beholder! These days guys just like to leave their socks at home!
@coralie Kenneth is a so so actor but I suppose there exists an inner decency in him where even if he plays a villain you feel he has some humanity in him. He seems humble in that sense. Vincent lacks that. he can play uncouth but Ma Kwai needs a guy we like even when he is unlikable. WHY? WHY ISN'T RUCO GIVEN A ROLE LIKE THIS?!??!??! When Ruco plays nice guy he is like dumbed down. I feel like slapping him. 2 times i felt this way. Must be the curse of Nancy.
@siro112233 Nominations, I agree, Winning... not yet, Depends on how My Ages Apart ends. So far Exorcist's metre and My Ages Apart are TVB's best series of the year. If theres a comedy and drama, each can win respective category. I am very impressed with Hubert and would hope to see him get a nomination if not a win perhaps in a new award. Newcomer, or most potential or something. I do agree the villain in Exorcist's metre is very good. Perhaps Exorcist's metre can win Best Scene or Most Hearfelt scene which are plenty. Cried a few times already. Good guys dropping like flies. Just my opinion... "For me, Best drama – Nope. No way. We have Legal Mavericks, Tiger Mom Blues, Destination Nowhere, Line Walker: The Prelude and My Ages Apart in the competition" Legal Mavericks has good acting but the story is insanely dumb. I find Exorcist's metre more grounded in this fantasy tale than Legal Mavericks which is supposed to be a grounded human tale. So nope. Tiger Mom Blues is ok but in light of the competition not very close. Destination Nowhere .. i thoiught this was another series!! Yes kevin should get a nomination.. young actor also... kristal for best villain for one. Best series... perhaps... it was consistent and a great character study. Line Walker, didn't watch so no comment. My Ages Apart.. so far the best in the list but waiting for it to fail but luckily still going strong. Best Actor.. My feeling is Vincent will get and does deserve it but let's give Kenneth some credit. Even in very serious tearjerker scenes he managed to deliver some lighthearted lines with panache. I consider Ma Kwai his best role in a long long time also because the series for once has a good story and a story well told. Best Villain - Hugo is it? That's his name? Yes I think so too except the series didn't have enough confidence in him to let him be the villain instead we have Mandy in a very awkward robotic like performance. She was much better as the gentle doctor. But yes, the villain is horrible person. Innately evil. Supporting actress - If those side actors are allowed to be named, but I do think Moon deserves it. She nailed her role. Supporting Actor - Name anyone in Exorcist's metre, each one of them deserves it from those who plays taxi driver to Issit King Kong his name? Him. But I will choose the actor who plays Seven. Best improved - Hubert if he was in another series. if not I will say Kenneth. why not? Just because he worked decades don't mean he was great. He did improved a lot. The series is ending tonight and my feeling is the ending will ruin it. But I hope for a sequel this time with Kenneth really is the demon slayer. I was hoping to see that side. And as a demon slayer angle, the story is limitless. I really do find Exorcist's metre slow to start but once it gained momentum it had so many great side stories like the taiwanese couple, the villain's father, etc etc. Still wondering where is Little Ho. To me for drama, it's the best of the year. My ages apart is so funny. Love the one about the rubber snake in the bottle and the many many special appearances by tvb's own homegrown actors. even Edwin Siu's part was funny and the punchline wasn't delivered by him but was about him. By the way Louis Cheung (god I forgot his name.. correct?) deserves a nomination for supporting. I hope for best ensemble cast award and My Ages Apart will win. Because Moses truly shines with Bobby and Louis in the group. And even Ali Lee is giving perhaps her most animated performance. Best series will be something else though.
for me, i find that both vincent wong and kenneth ma are equally good this year. hence, when it comes to the best actor award, both deserves it and it comes down to who has been in the industry longer and it's about time to recognize that person. vincent is still considered quite new compared to kenneth and i remember he has just won most improved male artist not long ago. A Favourite TV Male Character award for him this year is the right choice. I think he will be like Ruco. Win favourite male character this year first and then best actor next year. Kenneth has won Favourite TV Male Character back in 2012 for his Dr Cheung Yat Kin role in The Hippocratic Crush. Till now (2017), he has been going home empty-handed. It's about time to hand in best actor to him since his work in both The Exorcist Meter and My Dearly Sinful Mind this year are excellent.
@snoopy, @siro112233 Well, different people have different likings. For me, both dramas are among the few good dramas this year, and both the main leads (Kenneth and Vincent) are equally good. The Exorcist's Meter deserves to win some award, but not as many as @siro112233 has listed though. I would say the drama has the chance to grab Best Actor and Best Themed Song Awards. I really like all the songs for this drama.
@llwy12 Whaf a douche move! TVB shrinking their pool of artists. smh
@siro112233 Wow! Really Best drama? Half of the drama put me to sleep..I have to press forward to continue watching... For me, Best drama - Nope. No way. We have Legal Mavericks, Tiger Mom Blues, Destination Nowhere, Line Walker: The Prelude and My Ages Apart in the competition. Best actor - Maybe..But I think Vincent Wong will get it. Best villian - No way..Hugo is not good enough..it just the character that is crazy. Best supporting actor - Who? So No too. Best supporting actress - Again who deserve it in the drama!? Best improved actor - Maybe but I think Matthew Ho got chances to get it.
Legend troller stop trolling if u cant argue anything with facts. You are just a sore loser while tvb is a winner. Who cares whether u watch those series or not lol not ashame.
@kaykay I agree. Grace's role in My Dearly Sinful Mind was scary, sexy, and refreshing. Shame she was so underrated in that series, seems like everyone forgot about it.
Kristal best dress. But Ruco.. Seems intent on just looking silly. Thats not fashion forward. Very disappointed
Am sure he can Vincent is a better actor. Buy credit to Kenneth that his ma kwai is innately good guy aka hero. Kenneth did that rather well.
@funnlim have you seen over run over and vincent as "kui tao"? if you have, i don't think it's difficult at all to imagine talking about bowel movements. trust me, he can do vulgar and excels at it! :D
@kolo Don’t bother responding to that person, as he/she is a known troll and die-hard TVB fan who doesn’t like to hear anything negative said about TVB. To him/her, any artist who leaves TVB is a traitor and anyone who criticizes TVB is an idiot.
@kolo dun giv excuse la. Where the evidence people ask him, SORRY u not needed to attend! He such ungrateful. Need people invite only attend? TVB will still survive even without them but they wont get the acting skills n fame without tvb. They got ntg when they joined. If they never join also will got new blood that will shine. All those ungrateful people really hopeless after popular then wun remember TVB. If anita mui n loh kei still alive they confirm will attend TVB 50th birthday even without being told!!!
@lam86, gallen was invited by tvb to join the show and while he had prepared everthing to fly back to hongkong, tvb called him on the last moment and told him that they didnt need him anymore. this is very rude especially for gallen who had worked for tvb more than 3 decades its really painfull. the one to blame is the management of tvb and not gallen. you are right that tvb have brought many actors to stardom but without these talents tvb wouldnt reached this high. especially when in the 80ties and 90ties they fight rating battles with ATV station, all these actors had contibuted all they have and worked all day and night. they deserve more credit.
As usual, I didn't pay much attention to what celebrities were wearing, since I'm essentially "blind" to fashion unless it's really blatant or glaring. Most of the artists looked nice, though I do agree that Ruco stuck out like a sore thumb with that horrible outfit -- especially with the "too short" pants that emphasized the fact that he once again wore shoes without socks (a fashion faux pas that even someone like me who doesn't care much about fashion absolutely detests). The fashion piece aside, I have to say that overall, for being such a huge milestone (50th anniversary gala), the program itself was a bit disappointing (though definitely heaps better than last year's gala). The skit was actually kind of funny this time around (though of course, can't compare to the "classic" skits from older anniversary galas). For me though, the highlight of the entire show was actually the segment on the "green leaf" artists -- for once, TVB actually gave these unsung heroes (the true pillars of all TVB series in my opinion) the credit they deserve, even though it was only for a mere 10 to 15 minutes (which was still not enough time IMO, but compared to no recognition at all in past galas, it's already a huge improvement). Definitely one of the few times where TVB actually did something right for a change....
@diana80 its a waste no Raymond lam inside with his superb good song. If this series without good theme song n sub theme song will lose its soul. But the story seems good based on trailer. Just the actors n actresses could be better.
Many artists really ungrateful. Does gallen lo really need to be reminded to attend the 50th tvb birthday? Even no money or not to be told also should attend it bcoz its their mother station n where they got their acting skills n fame. N a single management person does not represent whole tvb. Dont giv reason bcoz u angry one person at tvb n you hate TVB. Without TVB they are ntg! Same goes with kevin cheng, louis koo, bobby au, tavia, raymond lam, andy lau, and many more that never bother to attend!. They impossible got chance to celebrate tvb 100th birthday but 50th also no attend.
@diana80 Yea, exactly! Watching the trailer, this series looks like it will essentially be the same as HOG 1 and 2 -- alot of yelling and screaming and arguing and people crying left and right. Lau Kar Ho has been using the same gimmicky formula for most of his series over the last decade and with the success of the first 2 installments, pretty sure he has no intention of changing that strategy.
@diana80 @alicesky Yup...and unfortunately, the next time this happens (and it definitely will happen again), all TVB needs to do is send Catherine Tsang over to talk to the veterans and do some damage control, then everything will be all good again (that's what happened with Steven Ma and Bobby Au Yeung and most likely the same thing will happen here with Gallen). I feel bad for Gallen too (especially seeing how heartbroken he was that TVB would treat him that way -- he basically put TVB ahead of his family and this is what he gets) -- but knowing how much he cares about TVB, I highly doubt he's going to be mad at them for long...this brings me to one of the things that frustrates me to no end...there's no way that TVB will change their behavior unless artists with clout take a stand against them -- which, as much as I hate to admit it, probably won't happen, since very few artists in HK are willing to directly go against TVB (pretty much the only exception out there is Anthony Wong -- I loved how he had no qualms about criticizing TVB and calling them out on their faults even as he was filming for them...he's probably the only artist in the industry with the guts to speak his mind and not give a care whether they retaliate against him). Yea, Louis made the announcement on his social media I think it was yesterday. Even though My Ages Apart is still airing and his scenes in the series weren't impacted, he was removed from all promotional activities for the series (so you won't see him in any of the promo events going forward). His management company China 3D (Stephen Shiu Jr's company) is currently in a major financial dispute with TVB over the movie Return of the Cuckoo (which was produced by Stephen Shiu Jr's company in collaboration with Shaw Bros), to the point that both sides are going to court in order to settle the issue. As a result, TVB is essentially boycotting all of China 3D's artists (not sure whether indefinitely or only until the issue is settled in court). Stephen Shiu Jr. said that they are fine with the boycott, as they are planning to have Louis focus more on his movie career anyway (luckily Louis has made pretty good strides in terms of his movie career the past 2 years, so not filming for TVB anymore won't affect him too much). As for Threshold Again -- despite how much I love Roger (and his role in the series does seem interesting), I don't plan on watching the series, as I won't be able to help comparing it to the original Threshold and it will only frustrate me. So far, I haven't liked any of the series that the various veterans returned for (I've been forcing myself to watch My Ages Apart the past 2 weeks -- mostly because of Bobby -- and so far my original instinct about the series has been correct -- the series is kind of dumb and mostly unfunny...Bobby is wonderful of course, but sorry, he alone won't be able to keep my interest -- especially for 50 episodes! Needless to say, I already dropped the series). I'm pretty sure I won't like Threshold Again either (and no, watching the trailer from the Sales Presentation did nothing to change my mind)....
@llwy12 I feel bad for Gallen. Although i do like to watch him in TVB series again (as i'm not a fan of Mainland series), but knowing the way TVB mistreat him, i'll support him if he decided not to film for TVB again. & Louis Cheung also won't be filming for TVB anymore? What a pity...i like him and is hoping to see more of him in future series. It is really disappointing to hear this piece of news. With regards to Threshold Again, i'll watch this for Roger, Frankie, Niki and Tavia. I won't hold high expectations when watching this later because i know Gallen's character is irreplaceable and was the reason why i love the series so much back then. Just hope that it will at least turn out as a decent series.
@llwy12 all they care is money. That's nasty the way they treat veteran artistes. Seems like we will be able to see many pageant on tv in coming years lol
Was it really so stressful for Bosco? He is just playing the same old...same old ambitious and flirtatious character. I don't think it wil be so much different from his character in Two Steps from Heaven. And pairing with Priscilla again? Anyway, will give this a try for the veteran casts. But even if do watch, i think most likely i'll just watch few episodes in the beginning, middle and the ending of the series...haha!! If only they can bring back Tavia, Linda & Fala...that will be great. I definitely love them more over Priscilla, Eliza and Sharon.
@tiffany When it rains, it pours....TVB had yet another fallout with Power Chan the last couple days and also Louis Cheung announced that he won’t be filming for TVB anymore (although Louis’ situation had nothing to do with him directly but rather his management company falling out with TVB). Add that to the Gallen issue, sounds like TVB is having lots of problems with artists who aren’t managed by them. Don’t be surprised if sooner or later, we will only see TVB -managed artists in their series and no one from outside, since it looks like TVB is pushing away a lot of non-managed artists by treating them poorly.
@tiffany TVB invited Gallen to attend the anniversary gala and even volunteered to pay for his airplane tickets back to HK as well as accommodations (since he lives in Mainland China now). They told him to calculate the total amount and give it to them and they will make arrangements. When he gave them the amount as they asked, TVB rescinded their invitation by calling up Gallen and telling him he no longer needed to attend. Apparently, TVB didn’t know that Gallen would be in Canada the week of the gala, on a family outing to celebrate his son’s birthday. He was planning on cutting his trip short and fly back directly from Canada so he could make it in time to the gala (thereby sacrificing his time with his family — it was his son’s birthday for crying out loud, yet he was ready to sacrifice that for TVB’s sake). But TVB, being the cheap you-know-what’s that they are, took one look at the amount of money that it would cost for a plane ticket from Canada to HK and freaked out, deciding then to “take back” the invitation. Gallen even said that he has no problems paying the money himself — he was merely doing what TVB asked, since they had volunteered and asked him to give them the amount. Gallen said that he was very disappointed with the way TVB handled the matter. When reporters asked TVB management (specifically Virginia Lok) about the matter, they pretty much acted clueless and said that there must be a “misunderstanding” somewhere. I honestly hope Gallen never films for them again. The artists need to take a stand and stop letting TVB treat them like crap and get away with it. Like that situation with Bobby earlier where TVB outright disrespected him and basically told him to his face to “take a hike”, yet he “forgave” them quickly and returned to film for them....so of course they are going to continue disrespecting artists, since they won’t ever learn their lesson unless the big name artists take a hard stance against them.
@llwy12 I heard the fall out between TVB and Gallen. What happened?
@jimmyszeto Well-said! It’s sad that almost all of TVB’s major productions this year (and next year technically too) are remakes/reboots/spinoffs / sequels / sister productions, etc of previous productions. TVB is obviously out of ideas and are struggling to justify their existence by rehashing “old stuff”. Btw, I’m assuming @jayne will do an article on this since it’s the big TVB news at the moment, but it was just announced that Mona Fong passed away yesterday due to illness, at the age of 83. So officially now, it is the end of the Shaw era for TVB (though not like things have been the same anyway since Run Run Shaw stepped down almost 2 decades ago, but with his wife gone too now, all the ties to the previous era are officially cut too, at least in my book...)
@kolo Well, seeing that TVB destroyed their relationship with Gallen over that stupid anniversary gala fiasco, chances are he will never film for them again. I love Roger and no doubt he will give an excellent performance in this series, but the rest of the cast is a joke and can’t compare to the original. TVB needs to stop messing with classics and come up with original ideas for once.
Humble kenneth. If based on body of work i will say nope. But based on exorcists metre i will say he deserves his nomination however the series will end. Will give one to hubert as supporting or newcomer or whatever. In fact the performaces are solid for eveyrone except mandy in some later scenes. Kinda awkward. Oh i cried buckets over a few scenes already. And kenneth can play vincents role but not as good. I cant imagine vincent as taxi driver who keeps talking about his bowel movements, My ages apart may seem offensive and quite daring in suggestive scenes but the story is great and actings great too. Moses chan is flourishing, ali lee gets to be different, kristal is good too but love louis! However i do love bobby but i wished for more scenes of his younger counterpart. Got some discontinuity issues but frankly thus far a few deserves momination. Also tvb pokes fun at itself too. Maggie looks ageless. These two series occupy my nights, one is slow burn and gets better. Dont read spoilers and you will be surpiesed at how good exorcists metre is. My ages apart is fast and funny but now getting a bit morose. Must watch. I hope theres sequelfor exorcist metre. I want to see kennth the demon slayer. Oh hubert wu.. can sing, looks god and actings raw but he is mesmerizing. Both performances in both series so different. But the way he speaks is so clear. He should be the monk in jttw uf theres a remake. He reminds me of kong wah but more raw.
Kenneth is the Only remaining actor of “The Four” in TVB. Even the drama is not great. Like those 4 acting. This year Kenneth is amazing!! In “My dearsinfull Mind”, his character gives me sometimes a Thrill. Great performance!! I didd’t want to watch “The Excotcist meter”, Because Tvb is lame in modern ghost-drama’s. But when I saw So manny positive reviews, I became curious. Amazing story. Lots of think about. The ghost Or demons are not verry frighnted, But the story is good. Kenneth is Superbb as a cab-demonfighter-driver. Susan Tse is And Ram Chiang are amazing!!! Hugo Wong is the new suppervillain for Tvb drama. Mandy Wong did not have many scenes in the first Seven episodes. But Its getting closer. As for Moon Lau always cute And charming when acting like a innocent girl. Hubert did improve After that stupid vampire-drama. I will vote for This drama as: Best drama Best actor Best villain Best supporting actor Best supporting actress Best improved actor
Gallen should had been in this instead of the provocateur and Ada should also be in this instead of oh my grad . They could have continued the story where the first part left out and tell a story on how they are going to expand the eco friendly city . And the challenges they face etc They won’t even have to bother about Louis Koo and Sunny being in this since they both died in the first part . They also could throw in a young actors and actresses ( Niki chow and the rest ) as Roger’s children . Gallen , roger and Ada’s ages even fit their age at the end of the original haha Oh how I wished tvb went on this route :)
Gallen lo = Threshold, he cant be replaced. its a big mistake to not sign gallen back. even there is roger again it will not be the same anymore without gallen. its nice to see frankie, tavia and niki, back in tvb drama but the replacement of louis ko and nicky wu with benjamin yuen and pakho chau is really a joke for this iconic drama.
@jimmyszeto true, u said it all. Might people watch it bcoz of Roger?? Perhaps, I don't mind seeing him in a villainous role again. His role couldn't be outshined like Gallen's and Sunny's. Hope he will save this sequel lol
@alicesky No one can replace Gallen Lo as the ultra ambitious but rule breaking entrepreneur. No one can match Sunny Chan righteous but ultimately evil performance(his best ever). No one can replace the innocence of Kenix Kwok. There are some casts that cannot be matched. No point in hurting the originals reputation with a much worse sequel.
Hope Tvb won't ruin an epic series with this spinoff. Are they really missing their prime times so much? Why don't they just produce new series with solid plot?
I kind of like the refreshing pair up w/Pakho Chau in LW2...haha lol...I am never a big fan of Bosco but i will watch for Vincent Wong. :)
@aiya oh I agree, which is why I said it's not always, which means there are definitely exceptions to the rule, such as Anthony Wong, Chapman To, Edison Chen and even Eric Tsang (until he got bonked in the head with a glass bottle.) Some people are much slower in learning even with age and experience. Kevin Cheng used to have a foot-in-mouth problems too, if you check his older interviews. Which is why I think he has mightily improved. There's correlation between his age and experience to become the way he is now, but taking it for a given seems dismissive.
@aiya totally agree with you.
@kaykay408 I agree with you. Ruco is the worst dressed male artiste that nite - his attire for the red carpet with that 'going fishing ' pants is just awful. What a mismatch to be paired with a girl so elegant and beautifully dressed! Then he has to wear that ankle length pants without socks with such formal attire during the performance - bow tie and all. The others look so good... Be it Kenneth, Matt Yeung, Vincent or Ben just to name a few - proper formal attire. What's with his fashion sense nowadays and to think that the girl he is going around with is a stylist!!! Just wear a proper suit. No more ugly ankle length pants - just doesnt make you look good and please know its a glam n glitz event so dress to the occasion!!
Yah, I agree.. she was a little much.. I also liked her dad’s little man role. Lol
@coralie Actually, according to psychologists who founded the concept of EQ, it is highly correlated with age and experience, That's why adults generally have higher EQ than children. And common sense also dictates that how well one controls one's emotions is a cumulative product of one's experiential perception. As for Uncle Cheng's contemporaries like Anthony Wong, his irreverent treatment of the paps is all part of a calculated strategy that helps to reaffirm his "bad boy" image which he had cultivated all through his career.
@llwy12 Wow I guess she is desperate for marriage! And she's the young one!! As to what he see in her..... I guess he see youth and from the way it look, she's very much in love with him I guess!
First off, who cares?? Let them live! Second, the HK/Asia reporters need to quit outing people. If they're not ready to come out, then they need to be left alone. The Asian media still has a stigma towards people in the LGBTQ community and that's something they need to work on.
@kaykay408 Think Ruco's mum refuses to wash his socks, that's why.
Most are nice. I like Priscilla's robe (even though it does look like she's ready to take a bath lol). It looks so good on her for some reason. Love Nancy's and Sisley's too. Nancy's hair style at first glance reminded me of Gigi Lai and Esther Kwan. Miss them so much! Especially Gigi! I'm so glad most actors wore long pants with socks (or at least covered their ankles). Thanks goodness that ugly trend is dying. Of course, Ruco is still representing it, looking like he's about to go fishing. Worst outfits IMO: Louisa Mak and Ruco.
I'm going to have to watch this. I'm very picky with my dramas that's why I don't watch much. And it's great Taiwan doesn't have censorship. The only bad thing about China's BL is the censorship. I mean, look what happened to Addicted and Advance Bravely had to cut some scenes even though those scenes weren't rated 18. That's why many fans were rooting for it to be released in Taiwan. It took awhile for the series to be released too and it couldn't be aired online. I sure hope the second season will be able to. ANYWAY I'm just gonna start rambling even more, so I'm gonna stop here. I hope this series will have a great storyline, characters and acting!
Best dress: Jacqueline Wong and Kristal Tin. Worst dress: Priscilla Wong, Grace Wong and Susanna Kwan.
@aiya haha, age and experience does not always commensurate with EQ, my friend. look at Anthony Wong and all those other hot-headed veterans of the industry. they still haven't learned to be PC with reporters and play taichi with them.
@kolo from your selections, maybe Roger Kwok could play Vincent's role well. The others are now either past-tense or one-trick ponies. I hate saying that about Raymond Lam (since I used to be a huge fan), but ever since his 'chok' phase, he's no longer the same. I can't even watch his dramas anymore (his mainland ones) without thinking how his acting has derailed. Whether Kenneth can fit into the role of Mang Haap isn't really up for debate because it will never happen. However, I can tell you that Vincent can play Siu Ma with flying colors, only because his resume speaks for itself. I'm not saying Kenneth isn't a good actor. I'm saying in terms of this year's awards, I think Vincent did a much better job. His character can be played by most people, but doesn't mean they'll be able to express it as well as he did.
@diana80 i agree with you that kenneth can handle vincents role as a blind lawyer. i cant understand why some ppl say kenneth cant. in my opinion the dark stubborn lawyer character isnt too difficult to portay with. vincent fits this character but also kenneth. kenneth can portray all kind of emotions no mather righteous, evil or comedic, he can handle it. and more actors will fits this character such as roger kwok, lam fung, kevin cheng, they all will be probably convincing as a blind lawyer.
@coralie Uncle Cheng is approaching 50; there would be serious problems if he had not demonstrate the kind of maturity commensurate with his age and time spent in the business. I never understood why people keep comparing Uncle Cheng to his niece in terms of intelligence and maturity. For crying out loud he is 23 years older so he's supposed to be further along in these areas. Relational power imbalance is one of the reason why these old creeps prey on younger females because it automatically makes them look great and gives them all the power over their junior partners.
@diana80 That is disappointing to hear about My Ages Apart being just ok but I will still give it a try for the cast, especially Bobby. His chance of winning Best Actor will be reduced greatly if the drama isn't going to be a great hit. Not every actor can be convincing in serious drama and comedy.
Vincent has also shown he can act comedy in Over Run Over. Kenneth is much more experienced but both actors are very solid. Barely any flaws appear in their performances these days. I think it will be more disappointing if Vincent lost because there’s no guarantee he will be casted with such a tough character to play in the future while I’m sure Kenneth will stumble across more challenging roles. Either guy win and I’m happy though,
@msxie0714 if they were already established, then I don't think it'll impact their image much. But if they weren't, then their image can take a nosedive.
@diana80 I actually cant imagine Kenneth in Vincent's role. Kenneth can take on a variety of roles, but I can't see him in an idol one. His image doesn't fit. And to be fair, apparently Vince's role as a blind lawyer was tailor-made. So how could anyone take on that mantle easily? Whereas Vince can take on a rash and vulgar role easily, as he's done so many times before. I understand that sometimes an award is for the purpose of encouragement, but if his role and character really isn't the best, then he can try again. I said the same thing during the golden bell award when it was mark zhou (who was a total newcomer at the time) who won against Vic. Lots of ppl argued against giving mark the honor, but he really did do better than Vic in his role. If everyone gives out sympathy awards, then there is no need for awards to be fair
Kristal's hair is on point :)
@coralie A 2001 mainland film Lanyu was much more explicit and graphic and didn't affect the careers of actors Hu Jun and Liu Ye.
I tried to imagine what if Kenneth and Vincent switch roles; Kenneth as the blind lawyer and Vincent as the taxi driver...would they be able to perform each other's role well? My opinion is they both can handle it and both are at the same level in terms of their acting. Therefore, there is no issue of pity votes, but rather whose acting could leave a deep impression to audience. Anyway, given that Kenneth has been in the industry for many years and now that he has improved a lot, it's time to give credit/recognize his efforts as an encouragement.
@bearbear Yes...Kenneth acted the role of Ma Kwai very well. In fact, Kenneth has been improving lately and i don't mind if he is casted as one of the male lead alongside Bobby for FH4. As for My Ages Apart, it is just ok so far (not as great despite the strong casts). I'm pretty much watch it for Bobby and Louis' funny scenes...and some of Moses' too. I'm fine for Bobby to win the TV King (if not Kenneth) this year because he is indeed a good actor and his acting is always very natural.
@m0m0 well, yes. yaoi usually is made by woman and for woman. it's like, i don't know, shoujo story but with two male leads instead. there are tons of yaoi novel online and there are even more fanfiction writer who write yaoi story of their fav fandom such as Harry Potter, Sherlock.
KC has definitely matured EQ wise when it comes to responding to reporters' inquiries and nosy questions. I think Grace is pretty tactful too, but she has a propensity to add too many unnecessary details.
An award is not a pity game. It shouldn't be given to whomever has more pity votes. Both Kenneth and Vincent are strong contenders, but given the depth of their dramas this year, I still think Vincent was better. A good actor is a good actor - there shouldn't be 'too soon' remarks. If they did well in a role, they should be awarded for it.
@bearbear I can say the exact same thing about Kenneth Ma from HK. He is always boring no matter what kind of role he plays. The face itself spells BORING. Sometimes just a vibe has nothing to do with physical appearance sometimes.
@cutie777 you are welcome.
@kolo Bobby I admit is the same as all his other funny characters. I didn’t say it wasn’t. Just that he put a lot more energy into this character than in his recent series. Yeh Vincent’s performance is stand out world class. Kenneth’s character is also another one of his typical comedic characters but his acting has been fast improving and is always watchable.
@jimmyszeto,lol if the performance of vincent is world class, then kenneth's performance is from other planet. admit vincent's role of a blind lawyer is taylor made for him but then again he still isnt world class, at most above average. and bobby's performance in my age apart is just acting like himself as a funny guy, he play this kind of characters many times before its nothing special.
To me Kenneth has improved in each series and that’s what we want from the experienced actors. For Bobby this is his most energetic performance in years. He really has put in his heart and soul into this. Lets not forget Vincent’s performance is world class. I don’t have a problem with any of the trio getting TV King. Ruco has fallen miles behind. That’s what happens if not improving for a while.
I've always like Kenneth. Hope he gets the award this year. And him and Jacqueline Wong make a cute couple.
@vinceboy Agreed. Although i also like Vincent, but It's rather early for him to be awarded the TV King title in Hong Kong, unless if there are really no other strong contenders for the award. But since now we have Kenneth who is at his best to compete for the title this year, so i'll certainly choose Kenneth over Vincent.
i'm having him as my pick for best actor this year too. vincent wong is a bit too early for best actor at tvb anniversary awards. a favourite male character award for him this year is sufficient.
I respect William Feng as an actor, but I don't think that he is cut out to play a stoic, disciplined monk. My first choice for Tanzang would've been Wallace Huo. I think that Zhao Li Ying's acting is going to be phenomenal as always.
If not Bobby (as veteran actor) for TV King this year, then i also hope Kenneth Ma to win it instead of Ruco or Vincent. Ruco has got his recognition last year, while Kenneth hardly met a popular and meaty role in recent years to enable him to win the TV King title. Thus, since he finally got this good role (Ma Kwai) that gives him the opportunities to showcase his acting chops, so i really hope that he could win TV King this year if TVB choose to award actors of his generation or those that debuts later than him for the award.
i seldom see kenneth ma act this good, im really surprised he can handle such wide range of emotions naturally. he is much better than vincent wong. and this drama is the best of 2017. kenneth for tv king this year.
I like his positive approach and attitude. Definitely rooting for him
If the complainer had a first class, or as it is more commonly known now, a business class ticket, just like Ms Motor Mouth, and they just selected Grace to board the plane before anyone else, yes, the complainer has a valid reason to complain. If they had an economy ticket, and Grace had a business class/first class ticket, and she was allowed to board before the complainant, then the complainant has no grounds to fret. I travel first/business class and that is the section of the plane whose passengers board first. Of course we know that Kevin is going to publicly support his girlfriend when questioned by the media, or anyone for that matter. That is quite understandable. So Kevin supported the memo limiting sexual themes in movies and tv series. While he is at it, Kevin should inform his parrot tongue girlfriend that he will gladly support her limiting her windmill mouth when she opens the hole in her face to speak to the reporters.
There's still a few episodes left but this series is so good! I thought it was going to be a silly ghost catching story but there are surprisingly a lot of touching and surprising moments. I'm definitely rooting for Kenneth for TV King this year.
@m0m0 my jaw dropped too. This IS really graphic and some stuff in it...not sure TW dramas even do for opposite gender couples o.O. I dunno what's gonna happen to these actors who are playing these roles...image is going to be hard to bounce back, similar to wang kai from Nirvana in Fire. He got the biggest flak for playing a gay character until he played Prince Jing in NIF
@pochacco9 Good to see another fan of The Seasons (and old 80s/90s sitcoms)! Indeed, who can forget such an iconic character as “Mah-Da”? Yea, definitely I can understand watching and re-watching series, as I did that a lot back in the 80s and 90s too! Yes, I was actually going to mention My Son-in-law as well - loved Sean in that sitcom and Dicky was great...it wasn’t one of my favorites though, as I was too irritated with Poon Fong Fong to truly enjoy that sitcom...her character was soooo annoying and I hated how she was always so unreasonable and would always treat her husband (Dicky) so horribly....she got on my nerves so much that I actually wished she was a supporting character so I would have to see her on screen so much, lol.
@m0m0 Now I understand where you are coming from better. I know what you mean. I think they the movie studios are slowly bringing this kind of series into focus. Maybe they did not consciously have a particular age for the audience, or maybe they did, who knows. The boys are not bad looking, but they are not well established leading men like Ming Dao, Mike He, Joe Cheng or Ethan Ruan or Vic Zhou, so the producers and studios do not have to worry about losing young girl fans. Can you imagine Joe and Mike, or Ming Dao and Vanness Wu being these character?. lol. Then the studio powers that be would not be targeting the young girl audience, cause they know how these girls feel about these men.
I do feel bad for the actors who were brave enough to portray these gay roles. They will be labelled as gay, even though they just might be straight, cause I find the masses identify the actors' roles with their, the actors' real life characters and way of life. For instance, a pretty boy who is a good filial man, and who has wives and girlfriends in his dramas , is a good, honest, hard working sweet, straight angelic person in real life, just like his character. If only the masses will take the reel life blinders off, they will be shocked at some things. That is why these guys are taking a career risks in this drama.
@bubbletea jaw dropped to the ground b/c its targeted audience is young girls. are they suppose to make young teenage girls fancy about two boys getting together?
@m0m0 why did your jaw drop, because of the graphic trailer?. It is very to the point, I must say. I am surprised that Taiwan film industry decided to tackle and make a film about same gender love, but I guess it happens . Taiwan has one of the biggest gay societies in the ebiz market. Many singers, managers film and record producers, actors, models are gay, A lot are bisexual too. A lot are gay but they have spouses or partners of the opposite gender because a beard is a nice safety insurance policy to have. Some of them even have children with their partners and spouses, but thank Goodness for artificial insemination.
my jaw just dropped to the floor.
@coralie well said, don't get me started on Miss Motor Mouth Grace Chan. She is the perfect example of having a cute face and nothing else and getting pushed really high up in the entertainment world. She has nothing to offer, unless flapping one's mouth like a turbo engine counts as a talent. There is a problem with today's batch of entertainers in the ebiz industry. They are given the keys to easy access in the business because of their significant others, family members, family wealth, or they simply have to have a gorgeous face, by society's standards, or win a beauty pageant. If they have any of the mentioned criteria, the rest as they say, is history. I for one, have no problem if these men and women make an effort to improve, but they usually don't. Why should they?. They know that fanatic fans will buy their at best mediocre music, watch their cheeseburger movies and tv series and go to their fanclub meetings and support any products that have their name or support.. They will garner fame and fortune while running on empty in the talent department, which is the core ingredient that should have made them famous in the first place. I remember days when there were stories of the actresses and actors in the Chen Daoming, Rosemund Kwan era and even a bit further back were looked upon as brash, inexperienced actors. Instead of letting the compliments about their looks go to their heads, they remained level headed and improved on their acting. Carina Lau and Leslie Cheung are also good examples of improving on acting and singing. These people ate ramen noodles and lunch boxes when they first started, worked long hours, missed important occasions with their loved ones, suffered all kinds of mental, physical and financial hardships to get to where they are now. They never complained when critiqued, but worked their butts off to improve. Today's newbies are automatically thrust into leading man/woman status without paying their dues and earning their keeps. If Chen D declined the role for the reason mentioned, who can blame him? Let me answer that, NO ONE. I would love to hear what @IIlwy12, @happybi, @janet72, @jjwong,
@cutie777 I agree, great idea, great comment.
@lyu310 hahaha,, your comment crack me up. If I child looks like the old HXM, I now know why he was so furious in not wanting the masses to see the child's face. We can change the way we look, but we can't mess with DNA. I know a couple who were not happy with how they looked, they actually think they are above their own ethnic race, so they bleached their skin. Let us just say they became the new Micheal Jackson. They had a twin boy and girl. Suffice it to say, the children are very dark. You can't change DNA, you can't mess with the genes.
@coralie Maybe because of his reputation ?! I remember hearing that he has "playboy and arrogance" image, being from rich family. Personally I also don't like his face. Don't know why. It just that he looks like narcisstic for me.
Seriously? Um, sorry but FH 2 and 3 both sucked, so I really don’t see the need to make a 4th installment. I find it sad that producers Lau Ka Ho and Mui Siu Ching have done nothing but produce sequels / spinoffs since returning to TVB. Is that all they are capable of doing nowadays? With LKH and MSC’s combined resumes and the number of good series they produced in the past, I’m disappointed that they are pretty much bringing the “same old same old” back to TVB. What happened to all the hype over that one drama series they produced when they were at NowTV and how “innovative” or whatnot it supposedly was? FH1 was a true gem of a series but FH2 was a poor follow-up, with the only saving grace being that the original team of Bobby, Frankie, and Yoyo were still in it (Linda too but technically she was only guest star)…FH3 was a joke of a series that was obviously made to promote certain artists – I love Wayne, but even he couldn’t save that series from being the disaster it was!
@davy I never said looks didn't play a part in this. but, if they ONLY have face and no talent, that wouldn't work either. if it was Janice Man who was acting in ABB's roles, at least I could verily agree she's pretty enough to be in those roles. then it's a matter of her acting skills. grace chan is the ultimate example of a vase with no acting skills and right now, her likeability is an all time low. you can't just coast along with pure aesthetics and expect to be lauded. btw, the ones listed as 'beauties,' like Gao Yuan Yuan, LYF...I don't find them typically attractive either. but at least GYY can act. I'm not sure about LYF, I was never a fan so I don't watch her works much. but from what I've seen, she's not a great actress either. so I never vouch for either of them.
Hi! I’m knew around here, but the thread encouraged me to post something. I love, love, love The Season and the When the Sun Shines.. Although, I enjoyed watching all the other ones such as Family Squad and Kindred Spirit, As my mom would say you can never get bored from watching “Qua Jeet” or “Mah-Da.” When I was growing up and I’d would watch them over and over again, too! Nice to hear that I wasn’t the only one! My mom and auntie (Cow Mo) used to complain about waving the same VHS! Lol.. those days were the BEST! Anyone remember “My Son In-Law” starring Dicky Cheung and Sean Lau? That was also one of my all time favorites!! They broadcasted a number of those shows on the Jade channel (262) way back like 7-9 years ago, but haven’t really seen those since.. I’ve been yearning to watch The Seasons! Each and every one of those characters and scenes were SO memorable.. I still think about the scenes from time to time.. I was so hooked back then that i feel like they are part of my family or that I was part of their’s..
@coralie Gao Yuan Yuan came from no degree, no competition award, no supporting character, and went straight to a main star only because they found her in some advertisement. Everything went smooth for her although she got main roles without previous experience, because she is really really really pretty. I think we just have too much problems with ABB face, it's not a typical chinese face but quite westernized. She doesn't fit well into ancient chinese beauty category either, I have a big preference for her in modern movies but not ancient. I'm not convinced anybody need to start out as some dumb supporting roles in entertainment industry, people were blind to that belief and started creating very dumb supporting roles that should not even exist to waste time. Zhao li ying is a very big thing right now, but if she still looks like how she looked 7 years ago, I doubt she would be famous at all with the same look from Red Mansion 2011 (only 1 year before the big & fast transformation in Fair Princess 2010). It's all about the looks. 7 years ago, Liu yifei and Yang mi were well loved for their natural beauty, while Zhao li ying is the same age as them but was not liked, it was because of her looks, not exactly because her roles were dumb. Liu yifei's Love Winner, Love of May, and Doukou nianhua (04-05) were all very very dumb, dumb'er than what Zhao li ying played in Love Killed Nine River Hall and Mudan Pavilion (07-08). But it was Liu yi fei's beauty that was so great, and people fell in love with (extra points was Liu yi fei was a multi-talent in many things). The characters unknown supporting roles Zhao li ying did back then could've been interesting, but she was not as pretty yet. After 7 years passed, all the beautiful girls in their early 20's (including Liu Shi Shi and Tang Yan) are not as pretty anymore when getting closer and closer to 30's. Despite Liu yi fei's multi-talents, her ratings are getting lower and lower too. While Zhao liying who did not look as good back then now looks better than everyone else, even though she is not talented in anything else besides acting (not good with talking and singing), that was how she's at the top now. From what I understand, anybody who's the prettiest, goes to the top.
I hope those parents understand that it's mainly up to them to educate and raise kids well. Not the primary responsibility of a television set. I've seen more sensitive mature content on western TV shows. Look at CSI and even South Park. These parents would flip out on those trashy reality shows there.
The first one was memorable. I remember the last wheelchair case the most. Second one was OK but never watched much of the third instalment. Some commented it progressively dropped in quality slightly despite good casting. Even Wayne and Maggie couldn't save FH3 from weak ratings from what I heard. So I am a bit skeptical of FH4 too even though Kenneth and Joey would make good forensic investigators. Ps: They need to fix the NOT MATCH. XD
@bubbletea Speaking of HXM's surgery, I'm dying b/c the chinese sources say his son looks like him before his operation bahahaha. Said he has "inner double" aka almost monolids/single eyelids. Savage. I mean, I understand you want privacy for your son, but of course the paps would take pics of him when he's exposed. At least the rest of China hasn't seen your kid, HXM. Take a chill pill.
LOL. I was thinking they should put on a Batman costume for their son so nobody can see how he looks like if they want to keep it so private.
I dont mind having Kenneth and Joey in the 4th installment but PLS bring back Bobby!!!! add cast member like Maggie Siu and Kristin Tin these 2 ladies looks good in being a female forensic examiner =P
I’m very excited about this hopefully it’s true that there will be part 4 coming soon and yes hopefully Bobby will be in it and of course it’s not the same without him in it. If Joey is in this drama then I do hope they will make her as a couple with Bobby. About Kenneth maybe he’s taking over Ron place as a cop? What about Frankie? Anyone think it’s a good idea to bring him back to the screen again? I do like him in part 1 and 2 with Linda.
War of Genders, Kindred Spirit and Virtues of Harmony are my favourite although I began to lose interest in KS and VoH towards the end. There is also Happy Harmony (餐餐有宋家）。Remember I was hoping to see Louis Koo and Jessica Hsuan pairing up in it but Louis' character disappeared as he had to film ROCH. Regardless, Jessica Hsuan and Vincent Lam were quite funny when they realized that they liked each other.
@wm2017 Totally agree with you. For the longest time I just can't figure out why I am never interested to catch his drama series. Not attracted to his looks but there are average looking actors whom I like for their acting and versatility and he is not ugly or good looking, like you mentioned.
@diana80 Yes, FH1 was good for its cases and the cast. Bobby wasn't his usual comedy role and portray the character well. Yoyo and he were comfortable as a couple. I dropped FH3 after a few episodes, it was boring despite the leading cast. I also enjoy watching Kenneth in his latest drama. He's quite convincing as a taxi driver, isn't he? :) Haven't watched My Ages Apart so can't comment but Bobby is a good actor and deserves more recognition.
I'm also a fan of the 1st installment of FH because i like the chemistry between Bobby and Yoyo. If TVB is seriously considering to produce FH4, i hope they will cast Bobby again with a new love storyline between him and Joey (as the new female lead). Meanwhile, speaking of Kenneth, his new drama; The Exorcist's Meter is a pretty good series (hopefully won't be ruined by a bad ending), so i'm hoping that he will stand a chance to win the Best Actor award in TVB Star Awards Malaysia next weekend. Although i also like Vincent, but at least he has won in Singapore. Therefore, Kenneth who has lead many series over the years deserve a recognition too, especially that he hardly got a popular roles recently. Thus, hope he can win any major award since his Siu Ma / Ma Kwai character is so likeable and he acted well for that role too. For TVB Anniversary Awards in Hong Kong, i'll like to reserve the Best Actor award to veteran Bobby Au Yeung (hope My Ages Apart is watchable/doing fine till the end) because it's TVB 50th anniversary...so i hope the BA award is given to a well-deserved veteran like Bobby, whose acting is undoubtedly very good.
Love the chemistry of Bobby and Yoyo. Kenneth?? Seriously?? Plsss bring back Bobby. Besides, im really interested in seeing Joey in madam role, cold face lol. But i dont think Tvb should make another FH. The 3rd season sucks, watched it bcoz i was rooting for Maggie's acting, seems like there r no roles that cause hard task for her.
Yay I love Joey meng! She played a pretty good cop in an ATV series.
my fav is the 1st one with bobby and yoyo! 2nd one was ok. i cant remember if i'd watched the 3rd.
@diana80 Elaine and the canuck lesbian auntie are both exploiting poor Etta for publicity and greedy purposes.
@coralie Etta Ng's lesbian auntie a typical corrupted canadian: Lazy, greedy, corrupted, poor, no-brain, shameless scammers and thieves who will do anything for self interests, esp calgary police!
@bubbletea Agree with your posts. Elaine and the corrupted greedy lazy canuck lesbian are both exploiting Etta for publicity, fame and greedy purposes. Both are not compassionate in heart towards the poor teenager. Etta's future is not gonna be good.
@bubbletea Agree with many of your posts. Sad that Etta got used by her Mom as a bargaining chip with Jackie and her own publicity and now the lesbian auntie also for the sake of boosting her publicity as a social media influencer. Etta Ng's lesbian auntie a typical corrupted canadian: Lazy, greedy, corrupted, poor, no brain, shameless scammers and thieves esp calgary police!
I do agree that the baby's face should not be made public without the parents' consent. The baby is not a public figure. However, the way the father spoke is so belligerent and ignorant. When he got his work done, he should have gotton a surgery on his brain also, to increase his intellectual ability. Brawn is not brain, and idol status is not intellegence or common sense. He still wants to fight to the death for the paps exposing his son's face to the public...... and here I thought that 16th century phrases and chivalry were dead. Tsk, Tsk, Tsk. I am not excusing the paps' behaviour either. Unless that child's face is allowed by parents or guardiams to be publicly exposed, that is a no no zone. They did cross a line there. They should be sued and held accountable. However stupid angry words like fighting to the death are not necessary. Even when HXM calmed down, he was still sticking to his foolish words.
As a late millennial, I only recall sitcoms up to War of Genders. Interesting to find out that Best Selling Secrets has won award. Come Home Love was really good. I think this sitcom has outshone most of TVB's prime time dramas during the time it aired.
@coralie he's not ugly or good looking but to me he's just very boring on screen.
@someonefromspace] lol...exactly what BS
@lia00027 Talent???!!. what talent for acting???!!!, where the talent at???!!!. Somebody better show me where the talent at cause I sure ain't seeing it. I hold nothing against you for being a fan of Angela BB, but that girl has no acting talent. You like her and good for you, but don't let your admiration and adulation blind you to her limited talents, or lack thereof. The best acting job ABB performed was the day she had that plastic surgeon *checked* her face for no signs of plastic surgery. She should have been given an award for that, lets say one of the Razzies....lol, and even then, all she did was made a fool of herself to us who know better. All ABB is known for is changing from the beast to beauty. Good for her to go after a beautiful face, but to try to make a mockery of people's intellect is what miffs folks. ABB's acting is really good?!! oooohhh pleaassee.....tell you what,.... take five, take a break, don't hurt yourself.
@coralie They did a few years back – that was GOTV, which allowed access to their entire library of series (from the 1970s to present) for a monthly subscription fee. Only catch was that the service wasn’t available overseas (it was initially when they did the free trial for a few months)….after it became subscription based, it was HK audience access only, though there was verbiage on their website that they would eventually roll it out to overseas audiences as well (obviously they didn’t though). After the launch of myTV Super, they got rid of GOTV and essentially rolled it into myTV Super subscription. For those in the U.S., there’s the option of watching via encoreTVB (that’s TVB USA’s official platform for all of TVB’s series and variety programs), however the catch with that is that they rotate old series through and not all their series are available, so it just depends on what they have uploaded at the moment you check it. I check encoreTVB every week to see what classic series they put up and so far, it’s only been a handful (most of the series they upload are from the post 2000s era, which I’m not interested in). Unfortunately none of the series you mentioned are up there at this time, but checking just now, they do have some good choices up currently. The 3 oldest series they have up there from the 80s are Hap Hak Hang, Looking Back in Anger, and The Justice of Life…from the 90s, they’ve got quite a few: Blood of Good and Evil, Time Before Time, Mrs. Diana, Secret of the Heart, all 4 installments of Detective Investigation Files, Man’s Best Friend, Journey to the West, first installment of Healing Hands and first installment of Armed Reaction, The Greed of Man, and the 1997 version of Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils (these last 2 are scheduled to be taken down on 11/25). A few months back, they had The Challenge of Life, Love and Passion, and all 5 installments of Files of Justice up there, but looks like they switched those out already...
Good to see Linda looking so happy and fresh face in HK. Marriage and motherhood, (M&M) sure agree with her.
@lia00027 it's not as if angelababy had any official claim to fame aside from her looks. she started as a model, for godsakes. she's had quite a bit of opportunity since she's started to act, but from what I've seen of her works, they were mediocre at best. she went from model to main star without having to jump through hoops to hone her acting skills. and you wonder why people think her acting suck?
Funny to see most commentors complaining about Angelababy's look instead of her talent of acting. To be honest i am glad tiffany drop out of any drama since her acting is infuriating sucks, thank goodness she had good casts before like Hawick Lau and Wallace Chung. As for Chen to suddenly drop there must be a special reason that no offical announcement announced yet so why drop the bomb to angelababy. Honestly speaking angela's acting in general and i, love you you, taichi 0, is really good while for those who don't like her it's up to u but that girl really can act just looking at her eyes to showing her emotions feel right. don't watch acting with bias hence one cannot comprehend the real talent.
@shimmerstars 1st group i thought about b4 reading this article too.
@someonefromspace Great minds think alike!
I really wish TVB would open their vaults for all their classic TV shows. I especially loved Friendly Halves I & II 闭门一家亲, Teenage No More 不再少年時, In the Realms of Joy 天上凡間, A Life of His Own 浪族闊少爺. A lot surprisingly with Hacken Lee as star.
I guess my main reason for disliking ABB is that she’s infamous for her looks. I had friends back then who thought she was the epitome of beauty. However, I never found her beautiful even before the surgery rumors. Her modeling counterpart Janice Man is waaay prettier, imho. It’s one thing if you’re gorgeous post-op, like Kylie Jenner or Kim Kardashian. But it’s completely another if you’re post-op and still look…plain. Even if that’s really her face and no procedures have ever been done, does she really deserve such critical acclaim when her face isn’t even that appealing? Coupled with her OTT husband and her poor attempts at acting and it just irritates me.
@anoninhk I totally hear you about re-watching episodes over and over! Those VHS tape days were the best in my opinion – that’s how I did almost all of my TVB series watching back in the day (believe it or not, I actually have 2 VCRs at home that STILL WORK!). Oh, I also loved Lee Kwok Lun in When the Sun Shines (his character in the series as well as his performance)! His clumsy cop “little man” character in the series was hilarious – definitely the most memorable character from that series by far! And yes, agreed that Betsy Cheung Fung Lei was excellent as Ling Ling (the character we all loved to hate, though technically she wasn’t a bad person just freakin’ annoying, lol). I actually like Betsy in most of the series she’s been in – she was one of the few MHK ladies back then who actually had a good combination of looks and talent and was versatile in her acting…too bad she retired from the industry so early, as I think she would’ve done well in lead roles if given the chance back then. LOL…yea, Roger’s character wasn’t memorable at all (though they did try hard to make him the focus of the series, even making his character’s name the same as his real name – bet it was hard to get used to being called “On Jai” both on and off the set, lol). Even Hacken Lee’s character was more interesting than Roger’s and Hacken was technically a guest star! LOL…yea, can definitely see why some audiences didn’t like Be My Guest as much -- the office gang was truly the driving force of the entire series and all episodes involving them were hilarious, whereas the family story arcs were kind of boring in comparisons. Joe (Simon Lui) and Laura (Emily Kwan) were by far my favorite characters in that series, lol! Loved Simon’s performance especially – his facial expressions were so on par and hilarious, especially in all those scenes with Emily…the sad puppy dog expression he would always put on whenever his character Joe was reminded of his ‘misfortune’ with Laura never failed to crack me up (I’m chuckling as I’m writing this, lol). Ah, the good old days of HK entertainment…I sure miss them! :-)
@llwy12 Thank you for the comprehensive answer!
We call this “news”?
@llwy12 Loved When the Sun Shines! I still remember whole episodes that I watched over and over back then (bless our VCR... may it RIP). Lee Kwok Lun was my favourite character in the series. I adored him as the battered bf of Ling Ling (Cheung Fung Lei was wonderful). Dickson's character was a little more devious but very memorable too. I don't remember Roger's character at all!! I didn't know Be My Guest did so poorly! But I recall as a kid, I only liked the episodes based in Eddie Cheung and Anita Yuen's office. The ones revolving around the 2 families or the pizza parlour were less appealing for me and I would sometimes skip them. My absolute favourite episodes were the ones of Emily Kwan and Simon Lui as a couple. They were hilarious together! My family and I still refer to Emily Kwan as Laura-jeh. I hope I can watch them all over again some day.
It's a shame I didn't like Bet Hur because I love Charmaine. Any news on that Yu Zheng drama she's in?
@snoopy Inside the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Kuala Lumpur
@anoninhk When the Sun Shines is one of my favorite sitcoms from the 90s era, right alongside Everyone Loves Somebody. I liked Be My Guest too (and no, not because my idol sang the theme song, lol), as I’ve always liked Eddie Cheung as an actor, plus the cast was a good mix of veterans and younger artists that balanced the acting out a bit….if I recall correctly though, HK audiences weren’t too keen on that sitcom, as the ratings sucked and a lot of people criticized it. When the Sun Shines, on the other hand, was indeed a great sitcom – yes, I’m partial to that series due to Roger Kwok (an actor I’ve adored since the 80s), but I also like how that sitcom gave some supporting actors who were already excellent actors in their own right a chance to lead – such as Lee Kwok Lun and Dickson Lee for example (both of whom gave superb performances by the way)…..personally, I feel like the two of them were really the ones to watch in that sitcom – Lee Kwok Lun especially – and Roger’s character was kind of bland in comparisons, but hey I’m not complaining, since they’re all great actors. Ah, I remember Mind Our Own Business! Loved the cast (so many solid actors/actresses in that one) but the humor was a bit lacking I think compared to earlier sitcoms.
@gregoryip I don’t think there is one, not for TV series at least…you could check Wiki though and see if perhaps someone might have put one together. As far as TVB series goes, there are a handful from years past where they collaborated with Mainland (The Drive of Life from 2007 comes to mind but I think there were a few others too), but it’s really only in the last 2 years or so (basically since Mainland investor Li Ruigang took over TVB, after which TVB officially announced that they will be focusing more on Mainland market), that they really upped their Mainland co-productions. The 2 upcoming anniversary series – Heart of Greed 3 and Beyond the Realm of Conscience 2 -- are both Mainland co-productions for sure (producers Lau Ka Ho and Mui Siu Ching were hired back by TVB specifically to head up the Mainland China production arm of their station so pretty much everything they will be producing will involve Mainland in some way)…so if co-productions are what you’re interested in, you might want to check those out. Oh, there’s also Wong Jing’s TVB series, which were technically Mainland co-productions since his production company is in Mainland (and he has basically pledged his allegiance and loyalty to China, choosing to cater everything he produces to Mainland audiences, lol), but I don’t recommend watching those series because they sucked big-time...but of course, it’s ultimately up to you....
no matter how many times William FSF takes the male lead role, he always gives me a villain vibe. It's unfortunate because his face is just very villain-y. I have a hard time trying to compensate his face with his role. but that's not to say he's not a good person. if they are together, I wish them the best of luck.
@llwy12 Thanks - is there a comprehensive list of mainland co-productions anywhere? I couldn't find one unfortunately...
@davy very insightful points you presented, and well said. The vast majority of ebiz clients get PS, be it models, singers, actors or TV hosts. That includes the men too, not just women. Yes, a lot of us know that ABB cannot act or sing her way out of a paper bag. Having said that, netizens were willing to ignore her and just let her be famous for being famous. We also were impressed with how wonderful her new face looked, natural and beautiful, despite the obvious tell tale signs of PS, cause her surgeon did damn great work. She is the poster child for the beast becoming beauty cause she was so pissing ugly, that she was fugly, even with layers of make up on. We all know she is arrogant, has an ego bigger than HK, loves and craves attention and is quite the little narcissist. Yes, there are a few in her circle that can be described in like manner. What pissed of people about ABB is how her ego and arrogance are so inflated that she thought nothing of people's intellegence by trying to insult her fans and crtics too. The thought that this woman was ready and willing to throw her morals under the bus by creating rhis elaborate public lie and spectacle by denying she had work done is beyond disgusting. The fact that she got some plastic surgeon to be part of her lie is beneath galling. Is her ego so massive that she just couldn't admit she had work done......It was a surreal spectacle. Does she rhink people are blund and stupid they ALL would believe her? She most certainly did, otherwise she would have nevwr pulled such an insulting stunt. What little respect I had left for her went out the door that day. I know she was useless as a model, actress, host and singer, but I uswd to applaud her for being resillient and making a name for herself while running on empty in the talent department. I am one of tens of thousands who lost any respect and support for her, and that includes folks from the entertainment world as well. It makes me jaugh when I see netizens say that ABB did not get surgery. Then explain the changes in the eyes, nose, lips, cheeks, ears, forehead. Damn the whole face has been reconstructed. But rhe change that is the biggest proof of PS is the chin. A human chin does not get wider and certainly not longer after they reach a certain age, even if they loose a lot of weight. How then did her chin become so elongated into her adult years?. That can NEVER happen without PS. Even a blind fool can see she had PS. To prove a point, I even showed her before photos, and then her after PS photo to a female doctor at VGH hospital, without mentioning any surgery. When she saw the after photos, still no mention of surgery, she said" if I decide to ever get plastic surgery, I want her doctor, or doctors to work on me".
Well, if they are dating, they are not denying it by screaming from the rooftop that they aren't. They are keeping silent about it, no admitting, no denying. It is not that fans and others want these celebs to go off like a parrot, like someone else we hear and read about, it is just that it simply makes more sense, and is not insulting to others to keep quiet about their love lives than lie through their teeth. Maybe they might be friends, platonic friends. It can happen in this world, where two members of the opposite gender are close platonic friends. It can also happen in the Ebiz world.Wang Lee Hom and Shu Qi are a prime example. It could be that they are friends and are building up the hype of a relationship for their drama. A lot of these oncreen couples do it. I remember when Joe Cheng and Ariel Lin did it for the Kiss Series, and finally denied they ever dated after the first and second Iswaks became critically acclaimed successes.so with William and Zanilia, who knows.....
Jerry Yan has had the same dated hairstyle for over 20 years. It's high time he made a change befitting a 40 year old.
Why is Ten Brothers on the list when it says it was a success and pulled some solid ratings? I enjoyed that series too :-)
I still believe that ABB is ONLY hated because of the plastic surgery scandal. Her acting skills were insulted over and over again, while everybody actually liked her without problems back in the old days when Love You You first came out, because we didn't know about the Plastic thing yet. For a drama like General and I, it doesn't matter which actress play in it, it will still be disastrous because the scripting and storyline was boring. I actually won't judge ABB's acting skill, honestly, every actress has been acting like the same damn thing lately and nobody was even good at it. Good ones are only veterans like Liu Tao and Sun Li. I strongly believe 97% actresses did plastic surgery as well, but because their past photos are not the most obvious like ABB. ABB turned from a frog to a princess stirred lots of anger for many people because it means as long as we are beautiful too then we can play in anything as well. But that is true, as long as you are beautiful you can do anything. Why do you think almost every actress did enhancements on their faces?
I believe it is a stunt to boost ratings for their shows, unless they are dating but want people to catch them instead of having to announce it. With those overly obvious masks on, they made themselves 10 times more noticeable when people might not even notice them at all. So it's likely a stunt.
The only series on the list that I watched from start to finish was Family Squad. I dunno if it was because I was a kid back then or what but I found it hilarious, and the characters so lovable. In fact, most of the sitcoms in the early 90s are some of my favourites: When the Sun Shines, Be My Guest, Mind Our Own Business, etc. I couldn't get into any of the ones in the 2000s at all, although I would sometimes have Virtues of Harmony (costume version) on in the background.
@coralie The Seasons was EXCELLENT!! If you can find it (many of the 80s series are hard to find nowadays), absolutely watch it, lol! :-) The acting was top notch (not surprising, since almost all the main leads were veterans and/or established actors/actresses and most of them came from EYT where they had to perform to a live audience every day so of course perfect opportunity to hone their acting skills) and the script was good (story flowed naturally and definitely wasn’t as melodramatic as A Kindred Spirit)....but the big bonus was all the guest stars who popped up from time to time and featured in a few of the episodes. This is actually one of the biggest things I miss with TVB’s sitcoms – the seamless way that they used to incorporate boatloads of guest stars into their sitcoms, which they pretty much stopped doing post 2000s. In The Seasons, the biggest name guest star was of course Tony Leung (who actually was in a good number of episodes near the end due to being a member of the central family in the series), but there were also tons of others throughout the series’ run – Jamie Chik, Margie Tsang, Eddie Cheung, Maria Cordero, Kenneth Tsang, Lydia Shum, Alex Man, Dodo Cheng….and that’s just to name a few! Definitely agree that the older comedic dramas and sitcoms were a lot funnier. I think part of it is because nowadays, they try too hard to be funny whereas in the past it was more natural. A lot of this has to do with the writers and producers that they had in the old days versus the ones they have now (the writers in the old days – I’m talking mostly 80s here -- were much more talented). Also having live skit shows like EYT where writers had to come up with new ideas practically every day and keep the creative juices flowing, it definitely helps sharpen the skills (and minds) of those behind-the-scenes as well as the artists in front of the camera. As for Welcome to the House – no shame in saying it, lol…Lawrence was the main reason why I was interested in watching that sitcom like I said earlier, but the script and the overall performances from everyone in that series were what kept me watching. Yea, I’ve been a “fan” of Lawrence’s since his radio days and have always preferred his brand of subtle humor over the “in your face OTT” kind from say Eric Tsang (don’t get me wrong though – I like Eric too, but for different reasons). A Kindred Spirit – yea, agree about Timothy, though luckily his radio gig was his main job (gotta say that Timothy was born to do radio, as he has such a beautiful, soothing radio voice, lol). I think more shocking to me was when I found out that Timothy is actually a devout Christian who does a lot of evangelical work locally and also outside of HK and how nice a person he is in real life (totally opposite of his villain image onscreen, lol). My friend met him at a Christian conference a few years back and told me how amazing he is on stage (he hosts, sings, gives amazing speeches, performs funny skits, does voice-overs, etc.) and how humble a person he is off stage. Yea, with his talent, he is definitely underappreciated by TVB – but then again, TVB underappreciates a lot of artists so no surprise there!
@llwy12 Never seen The Seasons, but I appreciate a lady who knows her dramas. Maybe I should catch it :). I dunno if it's just me, but the really old, like pre-90s comedic dramas at the time seem a LOT funnier than the stuff we have now. I actually remember rolling on the floor laughing because of some scene in a show. I dunno if I've done that post-2000 (I still did it for JTTW which is late 90s.) Y'know I didn't wanna say it in fear of sounding biased, but I also watched Welcome to the House because of Lawrence. I really like his trademark sense of humor. But that's definitely not the primary reason why I keep watching. The script was actually really funny! I wished it stayed on the air for longer. As for A Kindred Spirit, yeah even I remember it dragging out in the last 100 or so episodes. I felt really bad for Timothy Cheng (鄭子誠) after the drama ended. His image made such a deep impact that I heard he wasn't casted for a long time. I don't know if he was a newcomer to TVB at the time, but wow, he was amazing. Even now, I feel they underappreciate his talent. He can do pretty much any role with ease.
I wonder where is the gym location..?
@gregoryip I’m afraid it will be hard for you to find a “high budget” TVB series that doesn’t have Mainland production money in it. TVB is known for being exceedingly cheap, especially in the Mona Fong era (post 2000s) – most of their money is spent buying broadcasting rights to sporting events or paying big name artists to return to film for them (though the price is still way less than what those artists would get elsewhere – and it apparently depends on the person, as the recent fallout with Gallen Lo shows). Even now, with a millionaire Mainland investor (Li Ruigang) calling the shots at TVB, they are still super cheap and stingy when it comes to their own productions (choosing to spend money on expanding their footprint outside of HK instead). Pretty much if you want to watch a high budget series, you will have to look to the co-productions that TVB does with Mainland…otherwise, you will probably have to go with all the non-TVB web series that are so prevalent nowadays (former TVB producer Tommy Leung just announced a web series – co-production with Mainland – that has boatloads of former TVB people in it….not TVB production but will probably feel like one so you may want to try that one)…
@huynh Yup, I agree. Tvb wasted Ada's talent and time with this terrible drama.
@aiya Thats because there is not one one tvb drama that got this title.lol.
The worst worst worst tvb drama gotta be Recipes to Live By 《味想天開》 with Tony Hung as the lead. I still cant believe this Tvb put this drama during Chinese New Year slot..."Tai kat Lei Si"! Then the second worst drama is Bullet Brain . No doubt about it. The third rubbish drama I would have to pick, it must be Bet Hur (澳門群英會). 3 words to describe these dramas - stupid, boring and pointless. Oh wait, I also need to include Officer Geomancer (八卦神探) 2014, Lady Sour (2014), Slow Boat Home (2013), Beauty at War (2013) The Beauty of the Game, Biter Bitten, Sunshine Heartbeat,Hearts of Fencing, Master of Destiny (2015), Not Just a Pretty Face and maybe Yummy Yummy too to the list.
@coralie Yes, I remember Welcome to the House. I liked that one too and yes, agree that there were some witticisms in there that were quite funny, though in a less subtle way. In a way, it was Lawrence Cheng-brand humor (he was the main reason I watched that sitcom), which I’ve always enjoyed (that man is super-talented!) and the more I watched, the more I ended up actually liking the cast and the sitcom as a whole. I’ve re-watched A Kindred Spirit several times but yes, it truly is quite melodramatic for a sitcom, though I can definitely understand why it would leave such a lasting impression the first go around (it did on me too). With that said though, the last third of the series really waned quite a bit, to the point that it was easy to lose interest (which is why I’m glad they ended it when they did because it was starting to become really draggy and it was quite obvious they were running out of things to talk about). Personally, I feel like they could have cut the series by at least 200 episodes or so. I think TVB actually tried to model A Kindred Spirit after The Seasons, which was technically in the same vein in terms of being more of a drama series with short episodes rather than a sitcom, but The Seasons was way better done (and much shorter too, despite technically running for 3 seasons, no pun intended, lol). Also I enjoyed the acting in The Seasons way more (so many great actors in that series….the only one who pretty much sucked – at that time of course – was Gallen Lo, but he was a newbie back then, plus it’s not like he had a whole lot of screen time anyway – he was more known for singing The Seasons’ theme song rather than the role he played in the series).
they are already married!!! just pretending that they are single to create MORE "noise"

Hey guys, I’m looking for high-budget TVB dramas (not just sitcoms) Line Walker 2 was meh, but it had mainland production money so the lighting, cinematography, and stunts were great. Hence I really enjoyed it. Any suggestions?
